Why not just buy a usb cigarette plug in? Throw it in your glovebox when you don't need it and you have the power port for other things, plug it in when you need it for charging.

I used the one like posted.. Except it's two USB ports. I took it apart and pulled the metal cap from the end so just the spring is exposed. This allows it to sit flush in my cig. lighter below the HVAC controls... It's black and looks pretty factory looking... I'll snap a pic if you want but it's pretty straight forward. Charges at over 1000mA

Sounds like a nice fire hazard you have created there.

You can buy the whole Griffin car kit with double USB heads and a USB cable from Best Buy for $35-40 every day. If you need one for the rear power point as well, $80 is still cheaper than possibly causing a fire hazard in your ride.

I can understand that, monoxide. I would like to have a USB port sticking out right next to my cig lighter, since I have space on either side, but I've just been too lazy to research all the details of such a mod...

I got a USB bulkhead adapter from B&B Electronics and mounted it next to the cigar lighter also,
Mine is round and had the pig tail on it that I used to a cigar lighter USB adapter that I tagged on the back of the power port wires in the dash.

I used round, as it matched the ~ size of the cigar lighter, but that is a personal pref thing.

I have some 1/4' thick black ABS plastic that I need to try to make a circle in for replacing the coin holder ( have a 4x2 ) to put another one there.

I meant the alteration of the spring mechanism. It's similar to leaving the cigarette lighter pushed in all of the time. Granted you don't have a complete circuit, unless something in the USB adapter fails.
