A 6 speed transmission really allows you to tighten up the power band, so there is no reason that you couldn't use the same engine configuration in the F150 that exists in the Mustang.
As far as that goes, I've heard of an example of a naturally aspirated 5.4 making 593 rear wheel horsepower in a Mustang. That is about 682 at the flywheel friends.

Now, that's also a pretty radical engine for a truck. However, I don't understand at all why it wouldn't be possible to easily get 400 flywheel horsepower out of the 5.4 for the truck, especially with the six speed transmission. Anyone?

Ford seems petrified to release the official numbers still, that's pretty sad.
Is that 1mpg savings official, or just speculation?
Because in one of the videos, the chief designer says that there will be significant improvements in fuel economy, but they aren't talking specifics right now, and kinda tries to hide a grin.
Some people thought he made the grin when talking about the HP numbers, but that is incorrect. He only grinned after speaking of the mpg savings.

"Igor", one of the guys on the Blue Oval forums, works for Ford and said this:
expect mild increases from the 2 4.6l V8, and a medium increase from the 5.4l. (http://www.blueovalforums.com/forums...howtopic=20196)
So "medium" increase sounds better than "mild" but how much is it really? Also, I think someone said that Matt from the Jalopnik.com site was talking to the Ford rep at the show and they don't plan to release the numbers for quite awhile, maybe weeks or months?

In my mind, buying a '10 isn't that exciting, by then the new model will have been driving around everywhere and we'll be 2 years closer to the next remodel, so it'd make more sense to save for the next one. I imagine the cycle will be about 4, maybe 5, years for refreshes now according to their accelerated plans for refreshing models more frequently than in the past.
Especially with those ecoboost engines coming out, they are very interesting to me, I'd love to hear more about HP and MPG from them, but to buy a first-year new engine might be risky - another reason not to buy a '10. So by the time it's 'safe' to buy it might be more financially wise to wait a couple more years for the next remodel.
So I do want to know those engine numbers sooner rather than later so I can focus my attention either towards being excited about a new F150 in my near future, or stop looking at it and concentrate fully on my house savings. I paid off my '04 2 or more years ago so having no truck payment is wonderful, won't ever buy a new vehicle again without being able to buy it outright. The only debt worth having is debt that appreciates (like a home... even in this market), not depreciates like a vehicle.
But you're right. Patience... patience... serenity now, serenity now...

The problem with waiting for the next best thing is that you'll wait several more years for the next refresh. Then when that comes you'll find some other excuse to wait a couple more years or more. Then all of a sudden 10 more years have passed and you'll still driving around in your 15 year old truck. Does this make sense? If you want a new truck, wait a year or two for all of the bugs and options to come out. Then just buy it and be happy. If something else comes out that you like in 2015, for most people it will be time for a new truck anway.
As for comparing it to Turdra, Ford already has the Super Duty. Where's Turdra's Heavy Duty? The new engines are coming in 2010 and we have a lot to look forward to. That should take care of the power issue especially with the 6 speeds and the diet that the F-150 went on due to its new frame made of stronger lighter material.
