Hey everybody, it's been a while since I've had info on the New F-150, but we just got this info on the 2010 Ford F-150 with the 4.4 V8 diesel including a picture of one of the mules testing it out. I just reviewed the F-350 FX4 with the larger SD diesel and I can tell you filling that monster up involved more than a few gulps. Obviously, this one is a bit smaller. What do you all think? Would you buy a diesel F-150 with the price of diesel where it is?

 

I would buy one if it got 30mpg. With that being said, there is NO WAY that I would buy the first or second years production. There will be a ton of guys complaining about the 10's and 11's... JMO...

Even if diesel is 25% more than gas...a 50-75% increase in mpg is well worth it.

 

It would depend on how much the optional engine cost & what the MPG was.

 

It depends on the cost of the option, the actual fuel economy, and the price of gas.

I think that no matter how good the new F150 is, diesel or not, they're going to have a hell of a time moving them because of the current state of the economy, gas prices, prices of everything else...

I think that poor old Ford is releasing their new truck at just about the worst time possible.

 

I wanna see how the engine is packaged into the truck. I have no doubts that it's gonna be a bastard to work on, I just wanna weigh whether I need to change careers or not before this thing hits the roads.

 

...thx for the update Matt, i would definitely consider it if the mileage offset any fuel price differential by a significant margin, otherwise i would just stick with the gas v-8. I think the average automotive-application diesel is much cleaner burning as well than the 'smoke-wagons' of the not so distant past....so that may sway some into the market as well that may not have considered diesel in the past.

 

With Ford's claimed 20% increase in economy over the current 5.4, I expect to see 18-20mpg out of this thing. Not quite sure if that's worth it or not yet.

Edit:

According to my calcs, over 300 miles, the new diesel avg'ing 19mpg, versus the current 5.4 avg'ing 16mpg, with gasoline at 3.50/gal, and diesel at 4.25/gal, the fill-up is actually 2$ more a tank for the diesel.

So, you'd never pay off the initial investment of 5-6000K unless gas/diesel prices reversed roles again, or the claimed 20% is actually an understatement.

Yeah, don't forget two things...

Ford bragged the 6.0L was to get 10% better fuel economy over the 7.3L. It ws worse by 10%. Then, the flapped their gums with the same bullshoot with the 6.4L. Again, the economy was/is 30% to 40% worse. I imagine the 4.4L may have a shot at better economy, but as long as Uncle Sammy has hos finger in the pie, I'll bet the full potential of fuel economy will never be recognized. The only hope I see is the weight of the F-150 will be squat for the 4.4L diesel, so it should recover well. On the bright side, Ford did boast a substantial mpg gain on the Expeditions with the six-speed and they delivered.

I only get 12mpg city with a 5.4

 

I only see that truck getting 16 - 17 mpg on the highway due to all the friggin emissions crap on it.

Well, the 6.4s are getting 13 -14 on a good day. Knock off 1500 lbs, 2 cylinders, and my math sez 16 mpg. Loose the emissions junk and it'll probably pull off 22 if you keep your foot out of it.

 

Very true Zach... very true indeed.

 

I've heard of the new 6.4's on their forums getting 18+mpg no problem. There are ALWAYS people getting incredibly sub par performance. Take a look at this forum, half of us are getting 14 mpg highway while the other half are getting 20+ mpg highway, and the lower half call bs on those getting more, so now everyone thinks these trucks are incapable.
