I have a 2006 XLT SCrew 4x4 with the 5.4L V8. The most I ever pull is a 16ft V-nose all aluminum trailer that weighs 1625 empty and I never have over 2000 lbs in it. I only use this trailer 3-4 times a year going to antique shows out of state. Will the new 4.6V8 give me what I need when I need it?

Alot of times I feel that the 5.4 is alot more then I need for just regular trips without trailer?

Any help would be appreciated.

Deb
You've got it right, the 3 choices when they first roll out is the 2v 4.6 with a 4 speed, or the 4.6 or 5.4 3v with the 6 speed. The 4.6 3v is supposed to make 292 hp/320 tq, while the 5.4 will make 320/390.

Thank you for your reply.

Will the 4.6 6sp give me enough power for the trailer when I need it, which I stated previously is not alot. I am sure I will get a little better gas mileage on regular day to day driving (not pulling trailer) ???

The kind of weight you are talking about is not a lot, but the wind resistance will seem like you are pulling a lot more weight than you actually are since you have an enclosed trailer. Honestly, in your situation, since you pull out of state, I would stick with the 5.4. You may get 1 MPG better in normal unloaded driving with the 4.6, but towing you will likely see 1 MPG less with the 4.6. Plus, it is much easier towing with the 5.4. For me, I would stick with the 5.4. If it was an open trailer, I would probably go with the 4.6 3V. Either one will do the job, but I think you would have a little more comfort level with the 5.4.

Just for a little background on me, I tow a ~5500 lb travel trailer with my 5.4 SuperCrew and it tows like a dream.

Agreed 100%. Case in point. My fuel mileage pulling a 24ft enclosed empty vs with an extra 3500-4000lbs makes no difference. Its all wind reistance.

Although, that new 4.6 3v is getting up there with the power. Pair that with a 6 speed and it may be a good alternative. I don't know if the 4.6 is real torquey down low like the 5.4 though. That's what makes the 5.4 such a good puller. Really we will just have to wait and see. I'm real intersted to see what the mpg numbers are going to be on these new trucks/engines.

I think that is a wise choice! Good luck with your new truck!

PS...I'm jealous...I want the tow command package but can't afford an '09 at this point.
