Angry First Problem 09 F150-Trans Temp Gauge

Its a rather odd problem. When you start and drive the truck, the transmission temp gague seems to work fine but if you stop and turn the truck off for a few minutes, it will not return to normal operating temperature for many miles. The radiator coolant temp goes right back to where it was before the truck was shut off. Also, over the weekend when the gauge was SLOWLY returning to its proper spot, I turned a corner and it dropped all the way back to cold and started over....

Its acting very flakey and there is no real way to determine how it will act the next time you crank the truck after shutting it off at the store ot gas station.

Anyone else notice this ??? Any ideas ????

Sounds like a bad connection or faulty temp sensor. The fact that you turned a corner and it went to zero..would indicate a short or open condition. Let us know what the dealer says and good luck!!

My guage has also behaved this way; it seems to have gotten better.

mine did that once too but after the one time it hasn't done it since it may be a learn strategy, if it continues i would take it to get it checked.

I posted the exact same thing that you described in the transmission section! I have been monitoring it closely and if you drive at a consistant speed the gauge stays in a very similar place. If you do the stop and go thing or as you mentioned shut the truck off and start it back up again it seems to take a while to recover in temperature. I thought it was a gauge or sensor issue as well but the more I monitor it I am not so sure. I have a feeling it is the oil cooler circulating the tranny oil through it and cooling the tranny temp off and recovering. If you or anyone else has any input please post up. It does not seem to be isolated "thank god" and may if fact be normal. If it is not normal hopfully ford can figure it out.

Curious...do you all have the tow package with the aux trans oil cooler...could it be that the tranny just runs that cool

Not sure if the 6 spd is the same as my 4 spd. but on the 4 spd there is a thermostat in the cooling lines that will not let the fluid flow to the cooler until it gets to a certain temp they do not want the transmission to run to cold.

Im glad to hear its not just my truck doing this..In response to the previous question, I do have the towing package with the trans cooler...Do the others with this issue have the tranny cooler as well or does that have nothing to do with it ??? I am taking mine to the dealer tomorrow and am curious to see what they say or if this is a known issue....

I have the max tow with 5.4 liter and 6 speed tranny with the cooler. Let us know what the dealer says!

Aux Trans Cooler Thermostat...could be another reason why the transmission temp guage acts weird on occaision....with the tranny thermostat opening when warm and closing when cold...it probably takes a while to come back up to temp after cooling down a bit and closing. Also, I wonder where the transmission temp sending unit is mounted...near the thermostat and/or downstream of the thermostat - that could cause a temp flux when opening and the cooler tranny fluid in the cooler vanes comes rushing past the sensor?

+1, This is also what I was thinking! I talked the the ford service manager and he said that the tranny temp sensor is located in the tranny valve body and the tranny pan has to be dropped to replace it. I hope ford comes out with a TSB if this is normal so the confusion can be cleared up. It is -20 degrees C here and this may also contribute to the way the gauge acts. For the others having this issue what are the temp in your area?

Curious, I don't recall seeing the transmission temp guage when I was checking out the Platinum in person...was it one of the upper 4 guages in the IC?

Yes the top gauge farthest to the right. It has a pic of a gear with a temp symbol in the middle.

I just returned from the dealer for this issue as well as several others. I was told there is not a TSB or any other documents at Ford about this issue at this time. They sent an e-mail to the engineer about it but didnt hear back before I picked up the truck....Surely they must know about it.

I havent dealt with ford in may years, how are they in finding there problems/issues ??
