2nd USB Port for SYNC

Hey everybody, I read this on another forum and thought it was very interesting and worth sharing for us '09 Owners with SYNC. Apparently, there is a second USB port available in SYNC equipped vehicles. It's supposedly hidden but easily accessible and works with SYNC. Here's what I read elsewhere:

Ok so i been looking most of the day for the second hidden USB port for the sync system. I know there's 2 USB ports as USB 2 came up in the display a couple of times. Well today i found the second port. If you take the 2 screws from the center surround speaker the whole plastic tray will slide back and below that there is a extra USB port next to the one already being used.

The reason i was looking for it was because i have a hard drive and store all my music on that and it sits below the sync port in the little tray. Well i wanted it to be neater and run the extra cable from where ever i found it into the center console strage area. The trucks center console strips down really easy to be able to run your cable from the top of the dash to the stroage area. I will post some pics once i get the cable in and hidden. This is a great mod for anyone who dont like there MP3 player on display
Has anybody nosed around/behind this area of the dash? Sorry if this is old news, just wanted to share in case it hadn't been discussed here yet.

When I open up the dash to look for the second usb port, I'll take some photos.

I could be wrong but I would think that the second USB port is for the dealers to upgrade SYNC.

Yes. But you can use it and keep your gear hidden. The cable off the front is ok if you're plugging in and out. I am looking at adding a hard drive.

I wish they put one in the center console, with the amount of room in there you could hide anything you want. Plus the 09s have a lock on the lid!!

CobyMedic- You can put one in your center console by using a usb ext. cable. https://www.f150online.com/forums/im...ies/banana.gif Use the back sync port and run it under the carpet. Test out the device with the cable connected to the truck first in both usb ports before running the line under the carpet to see if there are any usb power issues.

You can add a hard drive as long as it can connect via usb port and you can power the drive off the 12V system. You can also just get a big thumb drive as well-no power connection needed.

Steve dont tell everyone lol.

Ok i ordered the part needed to run from a mini usb male to a stnadard ubs female. They should be here in next couple of days. I know that the system uses the usb-on-the-go standard which means that you prob cant run 2 drives at the same time. I am also in the process of trying to get the proper cable and sync face plate from ford so that it can be modded into the inside on the center console. I aint managed to trace the 3.5mm jack yet but i aint really looked for that bit yet.

I love the sync system, but IMO and it seems like everyone else is thinking the same, plugging devices into leaves the truck looking cluttered and prone to getting a window smashed.

I seen a commerical for sync the other day with the plugs in the center console, I belive it was in a Focus or perharps a Fusion, you think they would have done the same for the trucks. If sync is to allow hands free operations and keep the drivers eyes on the road, why do the devices even have to be out in the open? Oh well, I guess they knew F150 owners would just do the mod themselves.

It's easier to do that in cars b/c they all have center consoles. The issue with the trucks is that the console is optional and they want to make the head unit/sync interface common for the whole line, including those models with a bench seat, hence they make it a "dash mount" interface.

That being said, I agree with you, wish my USB port was in that massive center console.

FMC would have really had their act together by making usb ports in the glove box, overhead, center console, and one off the hitch for tailgating.
