Tires

I was looking at tires to find a E rated 10 ply tire for 20" wheels. I see the factory size is 275/55/20 which shows to be 31.8" tall in a Nitto A/T. Nitto rates it as an XL load 2833lbs@35psi. The only E is 275/65/20 but that is the tire I have on my F250 and is 34 inches tall. Anyone find a higher pressure rated stock size? It looks like there are more E rated choices in 18" 275/65/18 32x11"

Toyo makes a 10 ply open country A/T I think it's 285/55R20 and while I don't have specs in front of me, I figured out diff in height and it was only like 1.5% so thats what I'll be putting on. And I LOVE that tire regardless, have 'em now. And rim width was ok too.

BFG also makes the A/T KO tire in LT-rated 285/55/20, not sure all of the complete specs on them. But I have a set of them and I just bought extra rims from a fellow member and that will be my fall/winter setup.

The 285/55R20 BFG had a D load rating. The Michelin LTX A/T 2 in same size is E.

The XL passenger load rated tires are much lighter and less expensive.

we don't really get ice here, just some slushy snow. I never had those tires before, I just got a great deal on craigslist for them. So I thought I would give them a try. I see alot of other truck owners around here with them.

Steve,

I used to run the AT K/Os on my 01 F250 year round. I loved them in the winter - of course I am in eastern PA, not far enough from Philly so maybe we see a lot less ice here - anyway I always thought those tires treated me pretty good in the winter.

I am up north in Canada. I ran this winter with Nokian Hakkappalitta's 275/55R20 Extra Load (E) rated. We have everything here: ice, snow, etc... These are the best winter tires I've ever had.

You can find many-a-post where I state my unfavorable opinion of the BFG AT. it isn't as bad as I make it out to be. I've had better and it sucks buying a worse performing tire than something you've gotten used to.

The BFG A/T is all about image and name not performance. They wear poorly and quickly.
There was a neat winter tire I read about having walnut shell in the tread for grip...

I got 80,000+ miles out of a set of BFG A/T's on an Expedition. I'd say they lasted way past what you should expect for any A/T. I have run BFG AT's on a Regular Cab F-250 V-10, Ranger, and Expedition and never did they wear poorly or quickly. I had Boggers on my F-250 for 9000 miles before they were toast and chunks of rubber were coming out of the side lugs, thats wearing quickly and poorly!

BFGs bite into snow, specially hardpack great, on Ice about as baad as one can find. Not a problem if you don't have ice.
