the handle was omitted on the driver side on the 2010 for the side curtain airbag. The handle interfered with the deployment of it.

But the one on the passenger side doesn't?

No steering wheel, the passenger front airbag covers front and more to the side than the steering wheel airbag can due to size and angle constraints. Keep in mind that the steering wheel spins, so it can only do so much.

At least thats my guess.

Good post and good rationale 'powderburn2'. As a ret. engineer I know there are a lot of reasons things are built the way there are that are not readily apparent to the end users. You would think, however, that they could have maybe lowered the handle or rotated it more towards the inside of the post or even made one that pulls down, much like you find in mini vans etc. But, then again, I'm sure all of those options were addressed and discarded for numereous reasons, yeah, and cost savings alone is always an evil factor.

It could have even boiled down to the fact that the group responsible for it had run out of time and/or overrun their allocated budget. Cost is a MAJOR driver and always under the microscope. I remember a case where a supplier of bumper shock absorbers had to shave 1/2 cents off the cost of each shock. I know, that sounds crazy but then multiply that times how many were being provided and the end cost gets up there. Just another fact of life as we know it now.

A few changes/options i'd like to see:
-brighter reverse lights
-high beam indicator light should dim with the rest of the console
-retractable back window
-Option on menu to disable TPMS when using winters without sensors
-I also like the grab handle
