Is it just me...or are used F-150's bringing top dollars?
Just wanted to pose this question to those of you who have traded your used F-150 on a newer model lately.
My trade was a 2005, Lariat 4x4 5.5' bed with most of the options at that time. It originally retailed for $38,500, I paid approx $31K for it. This was back when Ford, Chevy and Dodge were in the rebate wars and were seriously discounting their truck prices. I very clearly remember at the time people were saying the large rebates were going to destroy the resale value of these vehicles.
My recent 2009 Platinum purchase experience:
New Platinum (retail $48.5K - I paid $39K) so it's not like the dealer was giving me extra for my trade because he had room in the sales price of the new truck. My trade allowance was $18K and the truck was in above average condition, (not excellent condition but had not been used as a work truck), with low miles...approx 35K miles - which does add to the trade in value but not as much as you might think. If you do the math $18K is approx. 58% of the original purchase price...that's actually quite good on a 4 year old vehicle of any kind...especially a truck. I have to admit, I was surprised that the trade allowance was that high and was realistically expecting somewhere in the $13 - $15K range at most...what have been your experiences with your trades?

Funny you should mention it.....
I just got a thing in the mail yesterday, explaining how Ford is low on used F150's, and therefore, offering top dollar for them as trade ins. Of course this letter was from a local dealership.... so how far can they be trusted ?
However, I've pretty much been hearing the same thing from unbiased sources, who explain that because of the tough economy, a lot of people are holding onto their older trucks, for longer... or to put it another way, "are afraid to make big NEW purchases".
Anyway, about trading in my 08', are you kidding me ? Mine was paid for the day I drove it off of the lot, and re-sale value means absolutely nothing to me. I plan to drive the freaking wheels off of my truck, until it's worth $50 at the wrecking yard ;-) .....like I pretty much do with every vehicle I've ever owned.
Not an 09' fan anyway.
Peace,
Fish

The used market is on fire this is the time to dump your used trucks. With 40-60K stickers on new folks are looking to save and buying second hand. My buddy manages a used lot for a local Ford dealership. He is at three auctions a week just trying to pick up inventory. They literally cannot keep used cars on the lot. I am about to return my F250 back to stock and let him send it through auction.

I think it really depends on the area and the economy in that area and dealers situations. I think there are tons of good deals to be had on good clean used stuff.
After looking at 07-08 Supercrews for high $26-$27K in April I found an 2007 XLT Supercab loaded and super clean for $17K. Again the differences in regions of the country are going to play into things. Some dealers are really holding the line on prices while others are damn near giving trucks away.
Banks are starting to really hold the line on credit and interest as well. They are turning down people with excellent credit now. I have excellent credit and was turned down by 4 banks flat out. 2 other banks would only go 36 months at 8.5% and no more.
Some people are fixing and keeping rigs longer due to economy while others are going nuts and buying new. Go figure.

I traded my 99 supercab xlt in for an 09 xlt. I paid 10,000 for it 4 years ago from a private dealer. I traded it in and got 8,000 out of it. I was happy with this. I had added chrome nerf bars instead of the black ones on it, tonneau cover, bed rails and it also only had 130,000 miles on it though.

I traded in my 2004 Lariat supercab for $13,500. NADA clean trade-in value was $12,725.
Now the dealer has it up on their website and are asking $18,950 for it. I think they are out of their mind. I see trucks similar to mine all over town being sold for between $14,000 - $15,000.

Thanks for the feedback everyone...it does appear that our used F-150's are bringing top dollar (for the most part anyway). Generally, when I price my trade using the KBB and NADA values, the dealer would usually try and get me to take in the range of $2K - $3K lower than the trade in value...now they appear to be stepping up and paying the trade in value. Given the discounts on new trucks...it is a great time to buy new (assuming of course you can find decent financing if you need to finance).

Nope just a salesman that cover 4 counties in FL. I'd say he's doing 35 to 40K a year depending + driving from the east coast of FL to the west coast a couple times a month. It's not hard to rack up the miles in outside sales.
