Project smoked mirror reflector

Well i was bored today and decided to smoke my reflector lense's on the mirrors.

I started by unclipping the orange reflector covers. They take a bit of effort to get them out but they do come out. Dont try this when the mirrors are cold as they might snap the clips that hold them in.

I then purchased some of this stuff

I gave the lense's their first coat after cleaning them but the paint started to crackle and split so i let it dry and sanded it back down till it was smooth again and gave them a thin coat to start.

Then i gave them one more coat

I might wait until fully dry and wet sand them because it's very hard to get a good smooth finish with type of spray. I will post pics of them installed in the morning.

They come out better than expected. They have a lovely gloss finish and they look better one the truck than i thought they would. Very easy cheap mod.

Def be careful when you remove them. It was nice and hot here today and even then you can feel they are very close to cracking. Just took a look at that other thread about the smoked lenses so gonna finsih them that way.

Cheers Stromtech. I Keep going out to look at them and feel how smooth they are. They come out smoother than what they were to begin with. I keep looking at the taillights now but i dont think they will look good with the light colour paint work.

Maybe take some pictures at night with a flash or some light to see how well they reflect?

Barritia - nice job...I too was wondering if they will reflect anymore? I'd be interested in a clear set if the aftermarket ever gets going on the '09 F-150 stuff. I was also wondering what it would look like if you tinted the underside of the reflectors - instead of the outside surface

Anyway, thanks for sharing your mod - looks good

Great work.

I will be doing this when I take the mirrors off to paint them with black Krylon fusion.

Looks great! Did you end up having to wet sand them or did they dry smooth? I'm just curious about how exactly you did it, b/c I'll probably try to do this soon and want them to turn out as well as yours did!!

I done the final coat of clear and let it dry for 3 hours and then wetsanded with 2000 grit and finshed off with a plastic polish. Come out smoother than when the were new.
