pulling of the skull caps from my mirrors?

Is it possible to pull off the skull caps from the mirrors?

Have a set of tow mirrors coming my way, but they have chrome caps and either want to have them painted or buy new colour matched ones. I havent looked at them yet, but I have seen a few broken mirrors here on the board. Wanted to ask around and see if its possible before i make a booboo.

Any tips or tricks if it is possible.

I remember reading in a post somewhere here about this...

said you had to remove the mirror glass, then there are screws that attach the caps.

Let me see if I can find the post....

Edit: Found what I remember - not much on instructions though....

3- Will the skullcaps be hard to change out? should I just get dealer (not the one i bought the truck from) do it?
Yes, they are easy. You have to pop off the top piece of glass to get to the 4 hex nuts that are holding the skull cap on.

Curious...does that imply then that there are holes through the mirror housing for the screws....

You will have to have them painted if you want them in color. They don't sell the color-matched versions.

The skull caps on the OEM towing mirrors are removable. The skull caps on the normal mirrors are also removable if they came painted or chrome, not sure about them if they are just plain.

The skull caps are not interchangeable between the towing mirrors on normal mirrors as they are different sizes.

If the mirrors you have coming are chrome you just could have them sanded down and then painted otherwise you will need to buy the skull caps that are already primed and smooth and ready for paint. Part numbers are 7L3Z-17D743-BA (Left) 7L3Z-17D742-BA (Right)

BlackJack, i thought they would have been offered from the dealer pre-painted as a colour match. Even if there was a slight variation in hue or tone, it would not be noticeable sice they are not attached to another painted item. Weird. I guess i will see what my dealer says.

Thanks for the part numbers!!!

Yeah, Ford only offers PTM (paint to match) parts. Same goes for your door handles and bumpers, they only come primed. I think is is kind of dumb also but nothing you can do.

I know my dealer with paint/clear my towing mirror skull caps for 100.00.

Yep I called my dealer too and he guess it would be around $100. I thought it would be more spendy than that, more like $100 EACH.

I hear you on price...was also kind of shocked when they told me that.

I know my buddy actually got his three door handles done at the dealership for 40.00 bucks. He told them no rush and just paint them when they are doing another car that color.....he only waited 2 weeks then got them back!

That just blows me away that they do not offer a PTM option. Guess its a way to make dealers make more money?

They probably figured out that the number of replacements of the mirror caps is not enough for them to paint up a bunch of different colors and stock them.
