Servicing the 09

Does anyone know how I can add transmission fluid to my 6 speed tranny?

Did anyone else find removing the oil filter for the first time was nearly impossible? Seems like the engine build factory over torqued it to like 500 ft-lbs! Wow what a pain that was.....luckily I had both the end cap filter wrench and the band type wrench. I almost decided to punch a hole in it with a srew driver just to get it to turn.

Folks have been saying for years that the 04-08 oil filters were tightened by a gorilla at the factory... 09s must be the same way. Why do you need to add transmission fluid already?

Yep the first oil changes are a pain in the ****. It's usually worth having the first one done at the dealer.

You shouldn't need to add trans fluid unless it is leaking (which should be a warranty claim) or 2 it was under filled from the factory (which should also be warranty). If you are just looking for general information you would add it through the dip stick tube.

Although I have a very fuzzy memory saying that there was no dip stick on these? If that is the case I guess you would need to unhook the trans lines and let the pump draw fluid in through the lines?

The dip stick is tiny and hidden under a cap on the side of the tranny near a cat.

Ok now you know what you want, answer our question, why?

Read the manual. You do not need to add fluid to the tranny in an 09. That's why there is no dipstick.

How come I need to add trans fluid ? just planning ahead for when the time comes to flush the transmission. These transmissions do need to be flushed as part of the scheduled maintenance, the fluid in there is not rated for life-time (100k+).

I crawled underneath the truck and saw the small dipstick on the right side on the trans body, attached to a srew-on cap. However, when removed there is not much room to pour fluid thru that port a because the catalytic converter is right there in the way. So I am thinking they must suck it in via the trans lines near the tranny cooler up front using the newly designed quick-disconnect fittings. Ford must have a machine that does this.

Where are you reading this?

I just looked through the manual, and all I can find is to change the trans fluid at 150K.

I thought the manual said the transmission fluid is good for the life of the truck. Maybe I read wrong.

Personally, I love the idea of the transmission oil not requiring changes at 30k mile intervals (or any interval) for the past generation of F150. The idea of saving that expensive transmission oil change service is love to my wallet.

I thought I read that also - trans fluid good for life...

But after reading through this thread, I took a look at the maintenance manual, and I found this entry under 150K:

Change automatic transmission fluid and filter
(filter not required on 6F35). (Except vehicles
equipped with the TorqShift transmission)

Digging a little deeper on Ford's fleet service site, I found the transmission fluid and filter is to be changed out at 150k miles. For me, chances are good somebody else will have to worry about that. The truck will likely be long out of my ownership by then.

Here's the link to the site:

I'll bet the 3000-mile oil changers will never be able to let that Tranny go til 150k!

Hmm..Well, I know I won't wait to 150K. My '01 claimed to have 100k interval on the rear diff too..(Changed it every 20k..and look at all the fine metal shavings!)

I have no doubt that the fluids might last that long. For me, the issue is that a mechanical device will wear..and those worn off pieces end up in the fluid! Cheap insurance IMO.

I believe those words cannot be more true.
