Passenger seat vibration...

The passenger seat in my Platinum (captains chair) vibrates like heck when I hit bumps and nobody is in the seat. There's no noise (yet) but I can see over time that it could start to rattle. It's hard to describe, but there's a lot of movement when I'm on rough roads. It's starting to cause the headrest dvd player to rattle a little already.

Anyone else notice this? The captains chair in my '05 didn't do this and the captains chair in my wifes Expedition doesn't do it either...

I notice something similar when no one is in the chair.... but I don't feel it when I ride in the passenger seat.

I have had a strong feeling that is where my squeek/rattle is coming from, but I have tried everything to get it to stop to no luck at all. Retaped wires underneat, tried to re-create the sound, etc. Problem is, the sound is there whether someone is sitting in the seat or not. Pisses me off not being able to find it, or re-create it to locate it when parked.

I noticed the same thing on my FX4 as well. On the interstate the emtpy passenger seat will have a vibration to it.

Same here on my XLT, its a bench. It shakes even on city roads. I wonder if the driver seat does the same thing when nobody is in it? Hard to test that though.

When empty and on rough roads my passenger seat always shakes/vibrates...did the same thing on my '05 Lariat...just the stiff suspension, 4x4, 20" lower profile wheels and the fact that trucks ride rougher in general. Not much you can do about it - other than fill it with a passenger.

That's what bugs me... my '05 Lariat did not vibrate like this... I do agree Hotlap, my '09 has a stiffer/harsher ride than my '05 did, due in part I'm sure to the 20" wheels and lower profile tires. And you are correct, when loaded, it actually rides better... hauling my +/-230lb KX450 and gear makes a huge difference in the highway ride for sure!

It's not a big deal right now, but I'm afraid it will eventually start to rattle as the truck ages and the vibration continues.

I suppose I feel better that it's not just mine that is doing it... I guess.

One thing I did that seemed to reduce the movement was move the seat up a little beyond half way forward and moved the seat back to a more upright position. It didn't seem to move quite as much then... but still more than my '05 ever did.

Yes, my KR is doing the same thing. I live on a bad road anyway, and when I turn off the highway that passenger seat acts like it wants to jump out of the truck. I did not have this problem at all on my '04 Lariat...so maybe it is related to the 20" wheels. Does everyone reporting this issue have the 20" wheels?

Also, may just be me, and the difference in the leathers between my '04 Lariat and this '09 KR, but the seats in the '04 Lariat just looked a lot bigger and heavier to me. I definitely do think the '04 Lariat rode smoother with the 18" wheels. Well, at least when I didn't have my Maxxis Mudders on it, as they were way too rough and loud...but great for deer season.

I'll have to try the seat adjustments that Mickeymeanie suggested and see what happens.

My 04 Lariat Supercrew 4X4 rode like a dream! It was super quiet and smooth as silk on the interstate. This 09 Platinum 4X4 rides like CRAP and has lots of road noise (both wind and tires), I have complained but was told, "thats just how they ride". It is so bad I will not ride in the slow lane as it will shake bad enough to spill a half full drink in a can at 80mph. Oh and yes the passenger seat looks like its about to flop off and break or something. I remember riding my my friends 04 F250 FX4 and thinking I would never own a truck that rode so bad in the interstate you couldn't even take a sip of drink... Now I do :-( and mine now rides WORSE than his F250 FX4.
I am tempted to buy a set of old 18" 04 Lariat rims and tires and see if it helps.

'09 Platinum Screw w/20" w/Captain's Chairs here.

The vibration doesn't bother me, it's the fact I think it must be causing the squeek/rattle I always get but can't seem to locate. It's def coming from the passenger side of the vehicle, maybe rear but sound more like front. Can't locate it, though.

My '04 Lariat w/18" & Captain's Chairs didn't have a passenger seat that vibrated. But it was the noisiest truck I ever owned. My 1997 and 1998 were silent as glass. But the '04 was noisy as all get out. My '09 is super quiet, except for that one sound which is why it's driving me batty that I can't find it and stop it.
