USB 2 Question

So I got all the hardware today to do the USB 2 mod (250GB western digital hard drive, and all the cables). I just finished hooking it all up in my truck and pressed the "sync" button and said "USB 2". Sync said that there was no device connected... How do i make it recognize my hard drive? Also, how should it be formatted? Right now it's default is NTFS, I basically just dragged my music folder from my computer and copied it onto the hard drive. Is this how your supposed to do that? Thanks

Let me re-phrase my question, what format should my hard drive be in so that it will play my music through the USB 2 port? My ipod works when i hook it to the USB 2 but the hard drive is not being recognized...

You might check the power requirements for the hard drive. The head unit may not be providing enough power through the USB cable for the HDD to spin up.

NTSF will work fine. Try just hooking it up and letting it start by itself. I plugged in my WD Passport and never did a thing. Works great. I just wish there was a better way to navigate the music.

Usually when this happens, I disconnect my drive and reconnect it, wait for it to spin up and try the USB 2 command again. I have the 320gb WD hard drive and it plays it just fine, so power is not an issue.

Not if it's the passport which is what I have, and likely what he has. They are powered by a single USB port.

How long is the USB cord? I assume you have a passport drive. These come with and are meant to be used with short cords. Sometimes they won't work with a long cord. I have experienced this cord length issue using these with a PC.

It should be reconized automaticly, but i do remember it only accepts fat32 format.

I have a 500gb WD setup. using only 65GB or 15K songs or so. it wont index for voice controll of songs. but i still love the setup. It does sort everything in the catalog on the screen, by artist, song, ect.

I cant find the exact program i used, PM me and i will email you the program. Im sure if you search the fourms you can find it. i used a link off of here.

i believe it might be here
www.softpedia.com › Windows › System › Hard Disk Utils
fat32format its a simple .exe opens in a DOS window. formated my 500 in about 10 seconds.!

Cord length and quality is a main factor in these drives working or not. Try the short lead in the normal usb port and if it works then you know it's the cables your using and not recommended spec.
