Switched 12V power.....

where have you guys accessed switched 12V power on these newer trucks? Are there any empty slots that are available in the fuse panel? Anyone come off any of the functions on the roof? (moon roof controls, lights...... as this would be ideal as both are located close to this location).

I am wanting to hard wire my radar detector and Garmin nuvi.

Any suggestions would be welcomed.

I'm pretty sure I used number 36 or something. There are several labelled "SPARE" in your manual. They already have fuses in them in the fuse panel. Easiest thing to do is buy one of those Add-A-Fuse gadgets and tap in to it so that its a clean install. Let me know if you need more info and I'll post some pics and stuff.

Just curious what Garmin Nuvi model did you go with? I am planning on getting a garmin gps but haven't narrowed it down to a certain model yet. I was leaning towards the Nuvi 1350 for $299.

I think I found the wires I am going to use. The wires for the moon roof are perfect. I will make the splice up there and it will keep everything really neat underneath.

I have the Garmin 255w. Absolutely love it.

Is that fuse switched? How can you tell which fuses in the box are switched, and which are always on?

I am going to be putting in an add-a-circuit to power my GPS and I found a thread on ************** where they were talking about hard wiring radar detectors. One user on that forum posted that they used fuse 37 and it only has power when the truck is on. The owners manual shows fuse 37 as not used (spare).

Edit: Interesting.....the words it starred out in my original post is the name of another f150 forum. f150 forum.com

I used an invisicord to connect my valentine one to the mirror for power. Used a blendmount for the actual mount. Recommend both products.

Check your manual. Page 323 on mine. There are many fuses that are spares. Then page 326, shows fuse/relay locations under the hood. Several "not used" depending on your trucks options.

I want to sync my laptop. So i guess I'll need a USB to USB connection cord. Anyone? Just would like some advice from folks that have done this if any. I wouldn't think it should be a big deal. My GPS will hook up to laptop and it would be nice to see a larger screen. Now I'm trying to find a mount for the computer. Would seem kind of lame laying it on the pass seat. I would appreciate any advice as far as a fixture I can mount to secure the laptop. I have plenty of room on the floor.

jhaskin - thanks for the link...I just purchsed the Escort 9500xi and ordered both the blendmount and Invisicord!! Should be a clean mount. Only thing I'm wondering about is the GPS reception with the detector hanging right below the mirror. I believe the GPS is primarily for the traffic cameras though.....

I like the mount, very nice looking product, price tag is a little high but something I will keep in mind.

Guys... I am attempting to tap into the powerslider/Moonroof switch for my GPS Install as mentioned above. What color is the switched power going into the switch at the top console? Thanks
