FX4 with Stock Rims and Larger Tires

Hi All,

I have seen a ton of great looking trucks posted with leveling kits complimented with larger tires and aftermarket rims. I have not, however, come across anyone with a leveling kit and larger tires utilizing the stock rims. My FX4 has the 18s and if I buy new tires, I want to keep the stock rims. I would love to see some pics of someone that put larger tires on their (preferably FX4) stock rims.

One other question: Once you have increased your tire size what does one have to do to reset/adjust the speedo so your MPH reads accurately?

Regards,

I have seen two fx4s on here with big tires and stock rims. One blue w/20s. one black w/18s.

As for the mph thing, my tires are roughly ten percent larger, so I just do the math in my head. 50=55, 60=66, 70=77. Close enough for me, plus it keeps the miles off my truck. Just don't forget to tell the people that might drive your truck.

An engine programmer can change your tire size. The dealer can only go up to 32.5" I believe.

Thanks for the link from 2006.

Any difference between the ‘08s and the ‘09s when installing bigger tires on the stock rims? I would think there are some new choices now since the 2006 posts.

Also, I will be keeping my stock 3.73 rear. I don’t want monster tires, but do want something a little BIGGER to fill in the gaps after the leveling kit without having to buy new rims.

Fitment appears to be about the same as the 04-08's. You can fit a 35x12.50 by using the OEM wheels and a 2 or 2.5 inch leveling kit with minor rubbing on the control arms at full steering lock.

tire sizing and speedo recalibration

all the f150's can fit larger tires and rims, and have the dealer recalibrate the pcm for the new tire size.
I usually charge $10 to do this recalibration on the side, if you would go to a dealership, the service writer would probly quote you 1hr labor to recalibrate.
you may also be able to recalibrate with an aftermarket tuner.
see ya

Does it really take them an hour to recalibrate? I would think it would just be a matter of measuring the new tire, hooking up the cable and entering the new value into the computer.

Also, I'm wondering if recalibrating the speedo changes the behavior of the transmission. I heard the tranny shifted based upon speed and throttle position.

No, it doesn't take them an hour, but I'm sure they have a 1 hour minimum labor charge.

I was looking at the BFG AT's and found that tires on an 18" rim are considerably more expensive than tires on a 17" or 16" rim.

Thanks Guys.

I have been trying to keep up with all the posts regarding upgraded tires but using the search function does not always cooperate…let alone searching for specific pictures of the stock rims and bigger tires.

Good to know that you can have a dealer/tuner update the 'puter.

I would suspect that "REAL" is correct that without the recalibration, the tranny will shift worse than it already does with the stock meat.

Anyhow, BUMP. Anyone upgraded their stock 18’s with bigger tires and have PICs?

I'm really happy with the competence of the 6-speed with the 4.6L 3V motor but have a taller set of tires for the stock 17" rims on order and was hoping to keep the good shifting action.

You might try also posting this in the wheels and tires forum, might get more bites.

I believe drdug27 had bigger tires on factory rims but then bought aftermarket. You might check his photo alblums as he took some quality pics of his setups.

Here are my 305-55-R20s on 20 KMC Hoss wheels. One thing to also keep in mind, the more aggressive the tire or deeper the tread the heavier the tire will be. These Mickey Thompson ATZ tires I run are way way heavier than a standard 305-55-R20 just in the extra rubber from the huge block treads.

I plan on running a 285-65 or 70 - 18 for winter rubber on stock rims... if i can find some.
