I wonder if they are not oiling the gasket before installing it, because once a mechanic put a new filter on my chevy 350 without oiling it and it took the old screwdriver thru the can to get it off.

This has always been my 'take' on why the first oil change is a PITA.

HELP! I can't get that damn filter off. Any suggestions other than the screwdriver technique?

Get to the auto parts store, and buy the correct filter socket.

Talking

My first change was a beast. Bloody knuckles, lots of cursing, but I'll be damned if I'll take it back to the dealer for an oil change. Finally got mine with an old-style wrap around wrench from the top side. Keep at it and move it a little at a time. You will prevail! That SOB installer at the factory is a b**ch. (I'll talk bad about him here, but hope I never meet him in a dark alley)

I was able to get mine off with the end filter wrench that's made to fit the FL-820S (non-factory) with no problem. The factory filter is different, so it didn't fit right but I tapped on it lightly with a hammer to make it grab.

That is exactly what I used too. It ended up cutting a gash into the filter, but I got her off !

BTW, that is a great filter tool which I have used for many other cars too.

I remember a couple of filters that gave me a hard time, but not always on an F-150. The first oil change is always the most difficult, specifically for this reason.....that the filter is on there so tight. Now granted, it always made things easier when the truck was up in the air on a lift, you could get a better attack angle on it. I always used the metal band style filter wrench with a flexible handle.....worked like a charm. I've never had to resort to the screwdriver method and could always get the filter off pretty quick.

Funniest thing I've read all day. I know this thread is old, but I just happened to stumble upon it.

I had a 2007 F150 where I attempted to do the first oil change not aware of the filter situation. After 2 hours, I still couldn't get the filter off.

I now have a 2010 F150 in need of its first oil change. I'm going back to the dealership and using my one free oil change they sent me. I'm not going to attempt that impossible task again.
