That's the thing - I think that tranny has been behind the 5.4 in Expy's for several year now. So it ain't really that new, AFAIK.

And don't forget fluid sealing is not a new concept at all - for anything. You'd think that by now, designing things to hold fluids without leakage would be purty much a given.

So - it may be a manufacturing quality / tolerance issue rather than a design issue - they farm these things out, I think.

I'm still just thrilled they did not delete some sort of dipstick entirely

 

My Transmission (2009 Screw 4x4) is now leaking fluid, it is intermittent, some days it leaks, other days it does not leak.

Has anybody tried replacing the faulty connector plug? (part number 6L2Z7G276AA) I see there is a TSB that came out in Mar 2011. My ford dealer (quirk) said they can't look at it because his transmission specialist is booked solid for the entire week!!!

It has 53,000 miles and is out of warranty, so I was thinking about dropping the tranny pan and doing it myself.

Is there an easy way to add trans fluid when I remove the dipstick underneath? Doesn't look like there is a whole lot of room for me to add quarts of fluid via a funnel. I heard someone say the engine has to be running when checking the level.

Truck has been pampered since I bought it new in 09.

I came home from work and noticed my truck had been leaking fluid. I have a company vehicle, so it had been parked for 3days. It was leaking at the rate of 1 drip every 10-15 seconds. Based on the amount of fluid, it look like it had started that day. It only has about 25K on it, so I was happy it was under warranty. I called the dealer and they said to just drive it in and it seem to shift normal. I pulled into the dealer about 20miles later and left it.

The next day received a call saying to come down and pick up a rental, because it's not drivable. I was also told it was under warranty for sure and there was a TSB for this problem,but the part is on back order and my truck should be ready in about a week. They didn't provide any TSB info other than a it was related to a seal/sleeve.

 

I crawled underneath and saw what appeared to be a crack in the transfer case. Can anyone comment on whether this looks like a crack? It was awfully wet all around.






The bulkhead connector looks dry to me.

 

53000 miles should not be out of warranty. I thought 5 yrs 60000.

 

Yeah, you are right, I didn't realize that the warranty covers powertrain for 5yrs/60,000 miles.

Going to lobby for a new transfer case to be installed, so I hope the dealer does not give me a hard time.

Still can't believe this is happening to a two year old truck!

 

I'm having some leaks from my transmission. On two different occasions I've noticed a 6-8" puddle under the truck. I've not been able to see it actually drip, but it's there. Probably about a cup and a half total fluid has escaped. It's a 2009 with 23122 miles(pampered), just to church and back.
I've got an appointment this PM to have Ford put the critical eyeball on it.
I'll let you know the progress.

Thanks for the info guys, looks like I may have a defective control cable seal. 2010 and 52k miles. The wife's Explorer is leaking where the xfer case and trans mate 62k. We are disappointed in our leaky Fords... I simply hate leaks. With today's modern machining and O-ring gasket technology you would think leaks could be avoided.
