Christmas Eve Crash - Totaled

A lady going the opposite direction hit black ice in her right lane and came across the median and hit us in our right hand lane. She had insurance ... Yea!

2009 F150 XLT Crew Cab Long Bed with extras ... super nice truck.

The initial estimate from the insurance agent came out to $10,700.
The truck is at the collision center and after the tear down a supplemental was filed for over $7k making the total to repair at around $18000. It is repairable. Air bags did not deploy!

The insurance guy called and said while it is repairable it might be in everyone's best interest to call it totaled and go ahead and settle. He said the reason is the cost of the rental 4 door truck for a month and a half and the deminshed value claim plus the $18k is getting up to 70% of the truck value. I said let me do my research and I'll get back to ya!

I have no insight, no compass, to know how much I should expect.

We went to the dealer tonight and with the same features we had on the 2009, they came up with only one 2010 out of 2700 dealerships in the US.

It almost identical to the 2009. I am going to need about $34k to get into that truck.

Do you guys have any insight into handling the insurance company to make sure we get back to even?

Thanks.

That's tough. Insurance companies know that most people don't want to drive around in a vehicle that just had 70% of it (in cost) repaired for both safety reasons and value. It'll be hard to come out even. But I'm not an expert. I'm sure someone else will have something more to offer. How much did your truck cost MSRP? How many miles?

Kinda reminds me of the first 09 King Ranch I saw, totaled on a flatbed wrecker. Made my stomach hurt.

If you are dealing only with her insurance company (and not involving your insurance company), you're facing depreciation on your '09. Check your insurance policy, you may have depreciation waiver for the 1st yr/12k miles but it will involve making a claim on your policy even though the accident responsibility is not yours.

Lastly, if you would like to be made whole, look at used '09 F150 pricing on the net as a guide. They tend to be on the high side (that's good for you).

They should pay close to sticker, esp if you aren't suing them for injuries. They should appreciate that somewhat. Putting you in a new truck is a lot cheaper than going to court. At 6k miles you should be near new money. Now just find what you want, stack up x plan, interest rate and rebates then start over again. This is your free pass to make the decision all over again. I don't know your situation but my dad got laid off and was about to lose his vehicle a decade ago. Some drunk rolled him down the highway totaling the truck and putting him in the hospital for a week. It kept him from losing the car to the bank and got him enough to get by until work picked up. he went out and bought a 6K cash pickup after that. Just a short story...

W/ my insurance, within 3 yrs of the purchase date, something like that gets me a new truck. I'd demand nothing less from theirs.

If it wasn't a write-off, it would make me sick too. If it was totalled, it's a redo.

My '05 got t-boned...no air bags deployed... I wanted it totaled based on the suspension damage and the fact that they had to literally cut away a section of the rear of the cab and replace it... I knew the truck would never be right again and it wasn't... I filed a diminished value claim which her insurance fought it... I filed a small claims suit against the lady but eventually dropped it after I traded my '05 for the '09... I was able to work a good enough deal on my trade that I decided it wasn't worth the stress and aggravation to pursue it any further...

Bottom line... accidents suck and nobody wins... good luck to you!

i would get an attorney. the insurance company will low ball you and give you low book price out your truck at kbb or nada it will give you a idea what your truck was worth.
