Painting a Platinum tailgate?

I remember reading a post about some of the platinum panels falling off. The tape was not holding. You might get lucky and the emblem could possibly be the only part that is not attached with tape. It would be easier and cheaper for Ford to build it that way.
I agree and think painting it to match your body color would look sharp.

Can you unscrew the plate on the inside of the tailgate to be able to look inside and maybe see if there are any pegs going in?

Won't your truck decrease substantially in value if you remove it? After all, isn't it made out of Platinum - not aluminum? Wow! I wonder how may beer cans it took to make. I will pretty much bet - from experience - that no matter how careful you are removing it it, the anodized finish and coating on the aluminum will check and crack when the aluminum panel is flexed such that at certain angles you will see a white haze on the aluminum. Now, if you plan on tossing it in the recycle bin, fine. If you plan on selling it, well...

It also depends on the grade of 3M tape used. I've been to quite a few store remodels in my almost 12 years with my company, and I've removed many a piece of wall while trying to remove a 3M taped store sign above the cash wrap. The 3M tape on those signs sticks so securely the exterior wall finish itself comes apart from the wall (or the sign breaks) rather than the tape just coming unstuck from the wall or back of sign.
At my store I avoid using the pre-applied 3M tape on any marketing signs, instead applying standard double-sided tape. That way the sign can be easily removed after the marketing period. It's probably not the same grade as they use for the more permanent store cash wrap signs, but I still don't want to take the chance after seeing the damage trying to remove those ones at store temp relocations where we try to save the sign above the cash wrap for the temp location.
So it could very well be just held on with 3M tape and nothing more. Would be interested to see pics after a removal, although I love the look of mine on my White Sand Platinum and would never want it removed.

Just to add my 2¢... What a deal for you if someone had a non-Platinum tailgate you could just trade for. That would be super convenient! If you really hate it then just try to remove it. The worst that can happen is you wind up taking it to a paint shop for them to maybe fill some holes, prime and scuff, then reshoot your tailgate. It would be several hundred and worth it if it makes you happy. It is likely that it will come right off and then with a little clean up and polish you have exactly what you want.
