My 2010 with the 3V 4.6L is the best shifting automatic I've ever owned but it does have different programming than the 5.4L. It shifts better than my Volvo but that had a GM transmission. I've never heard of the six speed from Ford having a failure. A lot of people think they shift too SOFT, that's why the aftermarket programmers firm up the shifts.

But people love to make a mountain out of a molehill.

Had a hard shift in the morning from 1st to second. The new program was loaded 6 months ago and I have had no issues. Was more a concern than a problem. Ford make a great truck.

I get a surging issue in the morning when its cold. When Im going about 25 the truck shifts into 5th gear and surges back and forth. Once warmed up the truck does fine. I havent been to the dealer. Im waiting for Edge to release their tuner and then if that doesnt fix it I will take it back to the dealer. Other than the surging issue the transmission shifts great. This is a great truck overall!!

Every since I have had mine, when it shifts from 1st to 2nd it surges and the rpm's go up. Also when I am wop and it shifts it has a bad lag in it and loses its momentum. Kinda like shifting into a higher gear at to low of speed, then it will finally catch up. It really sucks when you are trying to get up to speed quick to merge.

Let me first say I DO NOT have any trans issues. 2009 Platinum with 8300 miles on it. Axle is a 3.55 LS. Trans has been great on all issues. I do not have any of the concerns I have read on here. I was very suprised how fast
the truck will pull out from a stop or already at highway speeds to pass. I also pull a 20' boat in the summer and had no issues.
My previous truck was 97 F-350 crewcab 4x4 diesel with an automatic that had an occasional hard shift from 1st to 2nd upp until I sold
it with 97,000 miles on it. Something I just did not wan them it go into trans for. I figured if ti did not break by end of warranty I'd be good. IMO.

I had just posted the below in the tranny thread. it may be of some interest here....

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I picked up my 2010 Ford F150 Super crew yesterday. i have the 4.6 with the 6 speed auto tranny.

When i am going at a slow speed say around 50 km < 30 mph > say to enter a hwy ramp and lightly step on the gas the truck does not down shift but starts shaking like hell. If i step on the gas harder it will downshift and all is well. This cant be normal !! I waited for 17 years for a new truck now this ??

Any ideas ? i am going to call the dealer this week.

Randy

Your Volvo had a GM trans? Volvo is a Ford brand...
I reiterate... I love the 6 speed in my FX4!

I have an early release 2010 XLT SCrew with the 4.6 and I do occassionally have the transmission shifting issue. It is worst at speeds around 20-30 both on deceleration and acceleration. I need to go in and get the "flash" done I guess. I also have the tapping noise at idle in the engine. However, I've had no problems from that, other than the annoying noise at drive throughs.

The new F-150s are smooth and quiet, which is rare for trucks in my experience. You should be happy with it.

Aggie, how do you like the Flowmaster dual exhaust?

Anyone else have the "catch up when coming to a stop" what I mean is after you stop or are stopping (1-2mph) does anyone else feel as though the rear is catching up to the rest of the vehicle? It is not a shudder, but like a hard down shift or small movement (I know I know, I had a movement after coffee this morning also) that feels as though it is almost freewheeling to catch up? it seems to happen more going downhill than if a load (uphill) is put on it. Nothing big, it just seems strange coming from my 08 XLT ex cab to a 2010 FX4 Screw.

sml,

Yes, mine does the same thing. It is really strange. I guess the 'flash' will fix that too?

Took about a 20 min test ride in a 2010 platinum today. I drove on side roads, on the highway and drove it hard and easy and it shifted flawlessly under all situations. The shifts did feel a little "mushy" like the GMC does but I think that is the way these six speeds are set up.

I was also pleasantly surprised to find out that I have enough head room even with the moonroof. I'm 99% convinced to pull the trigger on a Platinum and leave GM after 20 yrs.

Yeah, Volvo needed a compact FWD transmission so they could mount a straight six transversely. Great engine, weak GM tranny. They engineered the car before Ford bought them.

... and knowing is half the battle! Thanks, I was really confused on that one. BTW, where is WA? I'm from Yelm...

As for the downshift "clunk" I have read that that has to do with the engines idling at a lower RPM to save fuel which somehow causes the trans to make that downshift feel like a clunk... I believe even the owner's manual references this issue as normal.
