I know I added one of the ezdown spring things to my old Tundra. It worked well, but was almost too strong - the tailgate wouldn't lay completely flat without some weight on it.
starting in 2004 ford added a spring assit lift to the tailgate. The ez down is exactly that. it lets the tailgate drop slowly and has nothing to do with lifting the tailgate.

the one on your tundra sounds like it was either the wrong one or it was installed incorrectly

My 2009 didn't come with one. The tailgates with the integrated step and assist handle are a little heavier. I bout the DeeZee EZdown from Autoanything and it only take a few minutes to install. My only complaint is the poor design of the spring clip that's suposed to hold the gas shock to the bolt in the truck but have not had any problems with it.

The clip is loose and wants to come off. I'm going to drill it and pop rivet it on.

Nice looking truck. Really like the bed rug and the tailgate pad. I'm not sure they had it available for the tailgates with the step back when I was looking at them.

It is fairly new. I think they might have come out with it back around last Nov. I talked with them and was able to order it for my '09 just before Christmas when Autoanything was running a Christmas special package with the extang Solid Fold bed cover.

I was wrong - I had an 'Easy Lift' on the Tundra, not an EZ Down.
