Thanks again for all the postive responsives guys!!
The steps drop down from the bottom of the door sill about 8 inches. They provide a 16 inch step height from the ground.
The light bar is from Smittybilt.
The mounting of the PIAA switches was not hard at all. The panel comes off (pulls off) from under the console stack, separate from the radio/climate panel. Once off, I measured and marked my mounting points; I drilled a couple of indents into the underside edge to make room for the insulated wires to bend over the edge to the front of the panel. And yes, there is room for 4-5 switches since you can string the wires behind the panel down to the front of the center console which is readily accessible by pulling off the lower console cover along the footwell.
Edit: I just reread your question and think you were asking about mounting switchgear behind the panel versus the self contained switches like the PIAAs which mount in front. I am not sure if you can get the switchgear mounted behind the panel as it is angled to fit underneath the center console. I would have to pull off the panel again to check.

Can you recommend a particular technique or place to start prying to remove that panel? Does anything else need to be removed in order to get it off?

Yes, that's what I meant. I didn't realize your PIAA switches were a surface mount. I can try and get that small panel off myself and see if there's enough clearance behind it to mount a few switches.
