Adding the Stowable Bed Extender

I was reading on another forum that if you add the OEM stowable bed extender and the truck didn't come with it, that the mounting hole is in the truck but it's not threaded.

Can anyone who has added the bed extender after getting their truck confirm if this is true? Also, if I have Line-X will that impede the install at all?

It screws right in, no problem. Added it on my 09. See my gallery. Total of 2 bolts. Can't answer on the Line-x.

Good to know, thanks! I bought one today on ebay so hopefully the LineX doesn't pose too much of a problem for the install.

The Ford bed liner has provisions built into it so the little rubber pads on the extender sit flat.

FC4-LX,

I did the same as you. Put in Line-X liner then installed the stowable bed extender.

I had to remove the liner where the "lock in place" things goes. Four places total.

You'll need to remove the liner so that the "inserts" touch the bare metal. I used a dremel tool with a sandpaper head. INstead of a fifteen minute job, it took an hour.

In retrospect, I should have told the Line-X installer that I was planning to install the stowable bed eXtender. They could have taped off these areas.

Hope this helps.
Hope this helps.

If you don't mind me asking, what did you have to pay for it? I'm going to buy one when my new FX4 comes in. I expect the dealers in Canada will want a fortune for them.

It may not work on an 07. When looking at the accessory catalog it states 08 up.

Yep, that's why I'm planning to put it on my 2010 when it rolls in. I missed it when ordering.

dont know if anyones interested, but i was looking for the factory bed extender from the day i got my fx4 and couldnt find one for under 350-400 so i just picked up one of the older aluminum ones for $50. fits perfectly and actually matches the tails and third brake light! of course that doesnt matter much now since i got the harley tails but there you go.

$281.05 from Tasca. I wanted to be able to stow the extender when not in use.

the holes are not meant to have threads so you all know. the bolts that hold the bed extender on will cut their own threads and this is the way it is suppose to be, earlier never had threads either. its why it best to use a fast spinning air tool.

Good to know! I just got one off of a 08 for free and he even took the bolts out a gave them to me. I too was wondering about the lack of threads. To me the new plastic ones seem cheesy. thanks!

I picked it up on ebay for $275. I think it was either $300 or $350 as an option with the truck but I decided too late in the order process to get it. The dealer list price was $580 and the lowest they would go was around $475.

The one I got was out of a brand new Lariat and the guy just didn't want it.

Pappasmurf - That's great info thanks....you can buy them for a song around here as well....still leaning toward the stowable but it's nice to know that's an option.

Kingfish51 - Tasca is showing $310 on the website....am I missing something? I looked at the below info:

9L3Z-99286A40-C Each $310.25
Black Bed Extender
Rugged black fiberglass reinforced polypropelene cage flips outward and extends over the tailgate to provide 18” of extra carrying space. When the cage is flipped inside the bed, it helps protect cargo from shifting. Easy to install and remove. For Styleside only.
