Pics of my new F-150 FX4
Hi guys,
I started a new thread since I'm no longer a "potential" buyer but now an owner of an F-150. I was a bit confused yesterday because my instrument panel lighting would not come on during the day even with the headlights turned manually on. But I think they're tied into the light sensor or something. However, when I took it out after dark, I was amazed at how the dash looks at night. Very nice! I also found a bag with a relay and fuse in my center console. It doesn't say what they're for, but I think I read its for trailer battery charging or something?
Anyway, I took some pics today after I removed the FX4 stickers. They just peeled right off in less than 5 minutes.
Really liking the new truck so far!

That's so Ford can use the same cluster in the FX2 and in the FX4.

Well, now that I've had my new truck for a couple of weeks, I've had a chance to get to the more subtle details of it. I posted the following highlights for my buddies in the Tundra forums comparing my old Tundra to the new F150. There are some cool details in the F150.
1. Seatbelt warning chime can be turned off for passenger or driver seat or both by using a procedure outlined right in the owner manual. This is a HOT topic on the Tundra forums. Some dealer's refuse to program them off stating that its illegal to disable the chimes. Obviously, that's not the case since Ford allows the end user to do it themselves. Nice to have options!
2. The power windows work with the key in ACC position. This how it should be. I never understood why Toyota only allows them to operate in the ON position.
3. DRL turn off when you put the truck in park. This is a nice feature. I used to have to turn off the Tundra and restart it with the parking brake on to keep them off in parking lots etc.
4. You must press the shift release button to move from D to N. I find it strange that Ford forces you to push a button to move to Neutral. You should be able to just slap the lever to Neutral without anything preventing it. The danger here is that because you have to push the release button, you can slap it in Reverse or Park by accident.
5. The 2010 F150 now uses electric fans instead of a clutch fan for engine cooling. This makes for a quiet truck overall. There is no roar when you start the truck. Plus it doesn't idle high on a cold start like the Tundra did. The electric fans may also contribute to the good fuel mileage I'm getting.
6. Fuel mileage is great for a truck. I'm averaging 19.5 MPG in mixed driving. I wasn't expecting this so its a pleasant surprise.
7. There is no "dead pedal" for your left foot to rest on when driving. This is a strange omission since it feels weird to drive with my left foot in an abyss. I'm getting used to it the more I drive it, but still.
8. There is no grab handle for the driver to ease getting in and out of the truck. There is one on the passenger and rear doors, but why not the driver?? I used that thing all the time on my Tundra.
9. Very occasionally, the transmission clunks when feathering the gas pedal at slower speeds. It's still learning its shift points and it sounds like a bit of clunkiness is normal for most of these 6 speed "smart" trannys these days.
10. When you select 3, 2 or 1 on the shifter, it forces the truck to use that gear and that gear only. So, if you select 3 for example, the truck starts off in 3rd gear and stays there the entire time. This differs from the Tundra in that you select the maximum gear the truck can use, but it uses all the lower gears to get there. However, the F150 does not allow you to select 4, 5 or 6 manually. So, you just have D-3-2-1.
11. Instrument panel at night has a very unified look to it. By that I mean the colors are all the same for the buttons, gauges, lcd displays etc. The Tundra SR5 I had looked like one team of people designed the gauges, and another the information center on the top of the dash and they didn't talk to each other.
12. The instrument panel lights have a mind of their own it seems. I put the full headlight system on manually and the cluster still won't light up unless its quite dark outside. To my mind, manually turning on the lighting system should bypass any "auto" feature and the cluster should light up too. I was trying to figure out the logic behind the programming of this feature. My theory is that because the cluster is black on white during the day, if the cluster lights are on, the blacks are not as black thus not as much contrast with the white background. Kinda makes sense I guess.
