Calling all 4.6 3v Supercrew owners

I currently have an '07 Supercrew with the 4.6 2v and am looking at trading it on a new Supercrew with the 4.6 3V 4x4 because the old one is such a dog. What are your real world experiences like with fuel economy, performance and towing. I'd like a 5.4 but can get a better deal on a 4.6 3V. Thanks!

This may have some info that will help. After reading that, I think a 4.6 3V 6 speed will do what you need.

I've got that exact truck minus the 4x4. I do medium sized hauling and regular driving to Houston and Dallas. I've never felt like it was underpowered.

Just out of curiosity if you are wanting to trade your 2v 4.6L in why not get a 5.4 instead of the 3V 4.6? You could also wait and get one of the new engines but I am always hesitant to get a new engine until it's proven in a vehicle for a year or two. Sure the engines have been in other vehicles but not trucks.

Interesting.

I love my 3V. I do very min towing right now, but there is enough power for me. The new tranny is nice too. If the deal on the 3V is that much better, I say get it.

I'm holding out for the 2011 model with EB3.5L Should be the best of both worlds, lots of torque and better FE than any current engine.

My Father in Law has an 09 Scab with the 4.6 3V. He gets over 21 on the highway and combined with the 6 speed tranny has more power.

I have an 06 Screw with the 4.6 2V it is a dog and gets 17 on the highway.

I only have 425 miles on the truck but so far the fuel economy and speed/acceleration is great. Just took a trip to the Jersey shore this past weekend and averaged 20.4 thats with 4 adults, some gear and the air on going 70 mph.

I had a 05 STX with an edge programmer and this 3v engine blows that away. As far as towing goes (4.6 vs 5.4) I think the 4.6 3V is fine for most towing. 18 Hp more isnt much.

I've owned a 2006 4.6 2V Screw, a 2010 4.6 3V Screw and now a 2010 5.4 Screw. Both 4.6s struggled towing my boat, which is only 3,800 lbs. They shifted and reved constantly. The 5.4 is a whole new game. It tows the boat wonderfully. The low end torque of the 5.4 is much better.

I test drove a 4.6 3V Super Crew and loved it, it did not feel underpowered at all. And keep in mind that this advise is coming from a guy with a 3V 5.4 in a Regular cab.

I have the 4.6L 3V and it's plenty of power for me. I do alot of highway driving and it cruises at 80 (mph) at just below 2000 RPM's. Anything over 15 mpg makes me happy, and I'm getting about 20 right now. (19.6 mpg) SMOOTH RIDE AT 80 ALSO!!!

its as smooth at 80 as it is at 40. Plus the interior is so quite, even at higher speeds.

The OP asked about comparison in performance and towing. Having owned two 4.6s and the 5.4, I can compare them. Yes, the 4.6 is fine for cruising and daily use. However, it is not in the same league as the 5.4 when it comes to towing. This is from my real world experience, which is what the OP asked for.
