Do you mean the drip tray under the filter? Don't remove that if so, it ensures any drips when you change the filter are collected and funneled down to the front of the truck where you can place a tray to catch it.

It looks to be a very handy and smart addition

Pic of the piece I am talking about, it is the triangle shaped piece sitting in the open at the bottom of the engine, bolted on top of the front cross-member... it brings all the spilled oil to the front of the truck so you can catch it without making a mess when changing the filter....

First of all what engine do you have?

The first oil change I did on my 5.4 was go from top and yes I removed the air intake to access the oil filter easier. After that, I do all my changes from underneath.

It seems I spill more oil that misses the drip tray which I can catch. Sounds like my tray is not installed correctly.

No need to remove anything. Go at it from underneath.

I remove mine standing in front of the truck. I put a remote oil filter on with a 15 hose extension and bolted it to the inside of the front frame. I love it!
