mpg calc on dash all over the place now, normal?

Put my first tank of gas in the truck, cleared and reset the avg mpg calc on the dash. Originally for the first tank it would be pretty constant, with bigger fluctuations only really happening when going from highway to street driving for example.
Now Its like instant mpg reader all the sudden.. For example Driving straight down the road might read 16mpg, slow down to stop sign jumps to 18mpg at the stop. Hit the gas (slowly) from the stop sign to get moving again instantly drop to like 10mpg, go straight again jumps up to 16, slow down 18 and so on and so forth. First tank of gas i maybe saw a .5 mpg increase or decrease in the reading if anything. I drove 650 miles or so on first tank (give or take) and the readr only made huge jumps when going on highway speeds to street driving and so on, other wise always pretty constant..

Do I have an issue to get fixed? Possible something screwed up when i reset it? Or what, its irritating the **** out of me now.

Sounds to me that as been that you just reset you AVERAGE MPG your average will change dramaticaly on the frist few miles run.. as you drive more the average should some how level to a mid point number.. greater distance travel v/s current gas consume.. i might be wrong but sounds logic to me..

Yeah, for the first 100 miles or so you will get changes all the time. As you get more miles on the tank it will take longer to change the average. This happens every time you reset the display. I reset mine one time while driving down the highway and it showed 30mpg for about 2 minutes. It was kinda cool, especially since I was going about 85mph.
