2011 Ford Map Update
#16
If it's like Garmin updates ($99), it is locked to the unit ID number, however... there are ways around that. With Garmin it's fairly involved, but doable. With the FORD unit, I am sure there are more hoops to jump through, especially considering it has to be a bootable CD recognized by the unit. But I am sure it's possible.

Why would you expect the Ford nav map update to be cheaper than the BMW? You are purchasing the same service for both vehicles so they should be the same. I don't know who is the provider for the maps in BMW's but if it is Navteq it doesn't make sense to charge more for a BMW map update than a Ford update.
Like I mentioned in my previous post, it doesn't necessarily make financial sense to have integrated navigation, so if that is your only consideration, just get a Garmin. I like having integrated navigation, so it's worth it to me.

My salesman told me that same thing 9 months ago when I bought my 2010 Platinum. I didn't believe it then and I don't believe it now. I think he had it confused with the Sirius weather maps which do a real-time self update of the weather radar. It worked good during the free 6 month trial, but it was too expensive so I let it expire.

I work with Geocoded Maps in Canada and know that DMTI Spatial sells their database to Navteq. Confirmed by DMTI complete with the errors in it as well.
In my 2008 Ford Edge, the dealer wanted $399 for an updated NAV DVD. Not worth it!
I would wait at least 2 to 3 years before updating to get the best bang for the buck as the changes year to year are not that great. This is what I have found over the 10 years I have been working with Geocoded Maps.
