QUOTE from letter: "Map Update for Your 2009 F-Series: If you are ordering online or over the phone, you will need to have your Navigation System Application Number. This 8-digit alpha-numeric number can be found on the System Info screen within your Navigation System's Information Menu. Once you have your new 2011 map DVD, simply slip it into your Navigation System and follow the instructions to perform the update. After you are finished, your system will be performing as well as it did, or better than the day you bought your Ford."

I remember reading somewhere when integrated nav systems started becoming more popular that it never makes financial sense to check that option box when purchasing a vehicle. That said, $199 is pretty ridiculous for a Ford truck considering that's the same price BMW wants for a new nav DVD for my 5 series. At the same time, though Ford and BMW and every other car manufacturer takes a cut of those update profits, I'm sure most of those profits go to the nav manufacturer.

I just can't wait to flush my $200 down the Ford crapper, just to get the same outdated roadmaps that I've got today. My 2010 NavSYNC is missing roads that have been there for 4 years. Maybe the 2011 update is the magic number but I'm not going to fart away $200 to find out.

Hey Guys,
This is just what I was affraid of. I'm ordering a 2011 and was trying to decide if I want to spend $1300 for and in dash "computer". I've been using the the Garmin "nuvi" that sticks on my windshield and it works great! New price about $150 when I bought it 4 years ago and updates are about $65 at Target - probably cheaper some place else. This GPS lists every dirt road in North Florida! The only place I've ever had trouble is in the Smoky Mountains. I would love to have the in dash model but if we pay a premium price of $1300, I feel like updates should be at cost - at least for the first few years. Just my 2 cents.

I used to have a 2006 Jeep Commander that also had a map update costing 199. Navteq, i believe, has the monopoly on the map dvds. My guess is their cost is fairly high since they drive around to keep their maps up to date. Where I live in Baltimore there was a recent major overhaul of the 95 exit system off our beltway (695). The old way was a left exit and the new way is a right exit. The nav is very confused when I exit onto 95 there. There was someone who hacked the dvd and was selling copies on eBay, but I don't know if there will be the same enterprising move for our nav systems. I think I will wait.
