Wheel Size question

I have a 2010 F150 XLT Scab 5.4L with 18" wheels. What issues would I have if I put 17" wheels and tires on? Any speedo, rearend or other issues or am I good to change out. I am looking at putting on 17" for the winter months. I can get a set of 17" wheels and winter tires for free from a friend who has a set from an 07.

Appreciate any input.

I am not 100% sure on this (maybe 90%) that with the larger 2010 front calipers, 17" rims from a 2009 or earlier pickup will not clear them. Not so sure on the 18" and 20" rims though.

I am tuned in because I was looking at the exact same thing. I want to upgrade my tires and wheels. Rims and tires are much more affordable in the 17" variety. The make both of the ones I want but it would be several hundred more dollars but I have 2010. Anybody know?

It shouldnt be a problem because a standard XLT and lower models come stock with 17" wheels, unless you get the chrome package thats the only way you can get 18s on the XLT from the factory.

That's exactly what I was thinking Joshn. It's the same braking system across all models right?

As long as the new tire diameter matches there would be no change in the speedo with different rims.

Here is a super handy tire size calculator. You put in both tire sizes and it tells you all the differences between them in several categories including how much speedometer error you will see.

http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/infoTireMath.dos

Really cool!

As I stated previously, it's not the rim diameter, but the amount of caliper clearance on the backside of the hub necessary to clear the wider calipers introduced on the 2010 models. From what I've seen your choices are the rims off a 2010 XLT or lower trim line or the Raptor.

So if I want some moto metals how do I measure to check for brake clearance? There were several models offered with 17" rims. Probably order them have them checked and if they don't fit don't buy. It can't ever be easy can it.
