I theory yes they would give the same stiffness to the roof panel. However, it could also be sticking up into the airstream especially towards the rear of the cab. This would create turbulence which would cause noise and drag. They would also be more visible on the truck's profile.

The 04-08 trucks (at least my 04) don't have this problem because they have a taller lip along each side/edge of the roof. I would step on the running board and hold onto that lip as well while washing the roof. Now I can barely hold on with my fingertips on my 09 roof edge since the lip is so small now.
Interesting. That explains why I don't have that problem with my truck, has nothing to do with the vent visors... I'll have to check for that lip next time I wash the truck.

Well, on my 01 Screw it was the only spot on the truck that rusted through
