5.0 or EB??

3.5L EcoBoost!
EB for me. ANYthing that gets better MPG without being so powerless that it takes 7 minutes to try and merge onto the highway.
I've been hyped about EB forever and a day, ever since I heard about it. What's got me even happier is all these reports from sites all over the internet who have now driven all the new engines, and every single one loves the EB engine the best (although all of them seem to like all 4 of the engine choices, not just the EB, which is great for FoMoCo as well).
One of the sites had an awesome quote at the end of their article. It said something to the effect of:
"So, which engine would we choose? The beefy 6.2V8?"
"Nope. We would choose the EB every which way, and even on Sunday. Why? Power, torque and fuel economy."
Now... WHERE IS THE MPG ON EB, FORD?!?!?!?!? Inquiring minds would like to know.

That's always been my number one complaint with Ford. They've offered the highest quality pick-up for as long as I can remember, but they've ALWAYS been down on power (seat-of-the-pants) when compared to the other two. Even in the Mustang (yeah, the Mustang had a few good years, but I'm taking the average), Expedition, etc., Ford always just eeks by in the power department.
They've finally changed all that with the F150 and Mustang. I'm glad to say I can now buy the best truck, not only from a quality standpoint, but also engine prowess and fuel economy. The perfect trifecta!

I got to drive both at the 2011 F150 test drive at the Texas Motor Speedway and my favorite was the 5 liter. It had a sort of european (BMW) feel about it where it seemed smooth and docile down low but after "getting-on-the-cams" it pulled like a freight train up to redline......very nice engine.
The EB on the other hand has great torque down low and keeps a smooth flow of torque as the rpms rise. This one will make a great pullin' engine for those of you who have big trailers to move.
For my money, the 5.0 will be in my next F150.

Yeah. Unfortunately it's still looking like the EB will only get about 17MPG city, compared to the '09/'10 5.4L which is rated at 14MPG city. Granted, nothing is official yet. But after a year of everyone saying the EB would get 400hp, and now it's official and only gets 365hp, it's hard to believe anything until you see it in writing.
(SCrew 4x4 - never looked at a 4x2, ever.)

The 3.7 is supposed to get 23 on the highway according to a sign at the Texas State fair. If Ford can get the ecoboost to run at highway speeds without boost during the epa tests it should do the same or slightly better.
I figure the 3.7 at 17/23
5.0 at 16/22
ecoboost at 17/23 but if they test with a 3.15 axle then maybe 17/25
I believe I read that the ecoboost has 3.15 but 3.7 doesn't so I base the above figures on that.
On Oct 14 ford will tell us epa figure for all but the ecoboost.

If you have a 2.5hr drive I'd say grab a gearhead friend and make a day of it. Spend the time driving everything there (don't discount the V6, it is pretty dang nice) to make the event worth the trip. Hold out for the long tow test and drive some of the competitor trucks if you can. Have fun!

And yes, definitely do the longer tow. I think the idea is, while you are driving the short tow course the Ford guy riding with you is feeling you out to see if you tow and how much. After telling him what I tow and how much, he right away offered for me to tow the "long" route. So since they only had one Ecoboost set up for the long tow, they are "preselecting' you before letting you drive it- at least that was my perception.
