16.2 mpg
Well trying to break in my new truck I took it on a 500 mile road trip. After filling her up with a full tank ~$80.00 all I could muscle out of her was 16.2 mpg on the highway without really pushing her hard. Does this seem about right? Truck now has around 600 miles and is getting a lot less (obviously) on street driving, got down to as low as high 9's on the street.

I took my first road trip when I got my truck from Houston to Austin (roughly 200 miles) I was able to keep it about 19mpg the whole time and thats driving 70mph. Now at 8000 miles I was about to keep it at 20-21mpg, and that was a on a trip to Dallas (Watched Cowboys home opener against the Bears a couple weeks back) which was about 300 mile trip. My hand calculation on the Dallas Trip was 20.1mpg so the lie-o-meter was a little off but I'll take those numbers any day of the week.

Just finished a 16 hour road trip, when I drive like I want to, mashing the throttle around town and going 75+ on the highway, i get 15ish city 17.5 hwy. 2wd screw, 5.4, 3.55.
I'll post up a thread on one of these forums how I was able to get over 23 hand calculated mpgs for the 200 miles of mixed, mostly mountainous highway and back roads.

I would say you are getting about average MPGs for a new truck. There are many factors that are causing the mileage differences people report on here. Gear ratio, 2wd vs 4wd, SCAB vs SCREW are all factors. The two biggest factors I have noticed are driving habits and the type of traffic you drive in. I bought the truck in Arizona where most of my driving was open highway with few stops or changes in speed and I was able to get around 18.5 MPG while driving 75-80 MPH. I now live near Tacoma Washington where I have to take I-5 which is stop a and go the entire way to work and I'm only getting around 16.5 MPG while driving anywhere from 5-65 MPH. I have noticed I get much better gas mileage when not using cruise control.

I've never seen 17 mpg, much less averaged it. Mine has averaged 15.6 (hand calculated) over 12,000 miles. (XLT 4X4 crew w/ 5.4 and 3.55s). Best ever was 16.3 and the worst (14+) was each time my sons visited and borrowed it.

Don't baby it. Stand on it and let it wind through the gears. If it blows up, call Ford and have them come get it. I have a good friend that is a Ford Master Technician and is on an Advisory panel in Detroit, and he told me to hook up my trailer at 800 miles and pull it at what ever speed I wanted, and to not worry about it. He said, if it can't handle it, you might as well find out early instead of later.
I get 17 to 18 running 65 to 70 and 80 and above 15.5. I have put 14,000 miles on it in 14 week.
