i thought i heard the gas mileage numbers on the stickers now were based off of real world testing from the epa, not so much of a standardized test anymore.

Now that you say that, I thought they did change the way gas mileage was figured. If I remember correctly if effected the figure by adjusting it down slightly, but I thought that change went into effect for the 2008 model year.

From your URL above: Each new engine delivers best-in-class towing and horsepower. The entire 2011 F-150 lineup will be at least 20 percent more fuel efficient than the 2010 F-150 lineup

It sounds to me like they're taking the average MPG of the 4 new engines vs the average MPG of the two old engines.

If that's the case, expect great numbers from the EB because the numbers from the other 3 weren't phenomenal.

If the Taurus SHO is rated at 17/25, can we really expect anything close to that from a 6000 lb truck? I was thinking no more than 23-24 highway.

Sure the weight is more but the SHO is AWD so that could put them closer theoretically.

Yes. There were EB trucks at the Drive F150 challenge that achieved high 20's, even low 30's on a city drive (average mpg, not a one-time coasting downhill kind of thing).

Will the average consumer see this kind of mileage? Doubt it. But there are folks getting low 20's from a 5.4 when everyone else gets high teens, so I expect there will be EB's out there getting high 20's.

Exactly.

Same as the new powerstroke. In media drives some got over 30 too. But Joe Sixpack with box full of tools, steeper rear end and larger heavier meats, he ain't going to get 30+. But he will get better than the 08-10 with more power and same for the '11 F150.

The Taurus is 17/25 AWD and 18/28 FWD for the 3.5. And the Eco Boost AWD is 17/25 the same as the 3.5. There is not an Eco Boost FWD to compare it to, but you can assume the AWD is losing about 2mpg hwy in the Taurus compared to what a FWD Eco Boost would. The Edge loses 2mpg HWY with the 3.7 FWD-vs-AWD so if the F-150 had a 3.7 4x4 option it would surely lose more than 2mpg HWY thus it's not offered in 4x4. You compare a very aero Taurus to a box F-150 kinda like comparing Flex numbers to the Taurus and HWY drops substantially. I don't see how the F-150 Eco Boost can reach more than 22 or 23 mpg HWY.......Which in my opinion is good for a truck. I just think people dreaming of high 20's are not being realistic here.......

I am going to agree with the above. While I forgot about the SHO being AWD, I still can't loose sight of the truck's weight and aerodynamics. An EPA rating of 17/23 is still great for this size truck and power. That is still better than any midsize V6 truck and even equal to a 4 cylinder Nissan Frontier.

Everybody expecting this truck to consistently deliver upper 20s will likely be disappointed. Those who observed the numbers on the test drive weren't able to confirm them against the lie-o-meter. My truck has seen indicated mpg in the mid 20s, but I've never gotten nearly that good in real life.

It's not a dream when we've seen it happen... but, like I said above, I would imagine a majority of EB drivers will fall short of the Drive F150 numbers. I'm sure the media drivers were babying the trucks to the nth degree to squeeze the highest number possible.

But, it's been proven that high 20's and even low 30's are possible. In multiple trucks at multiple events by multiple drivers.

Is this being figured by calculator and fuel use or is it what the information center on the truck is reporting? Don't get me wrong I can baby my 5.4L and get 18mpg combined driving and it is pretty hilly where I live and it's only rated at 13/17 . So I know it is possible to surpass the EPA certifications now that they use a more realistic formula, but high 20's or over 30mpg in this heavy truck must be downhill with a tailwind........

The trucks getting around 30 had the 3.15 rear axle and were driven for maximum mpg. Some even folded the mirrors in. No one is expecting an ecoboost truck to get 30 on the highway for everyday driving.

However, if numbers for the ecoboost are 17/24, I expect most to get an average of 19-20 with everyday driving (city and highway combination). And that would make most folks very happy

I've owned 3 5.4L F-150s and have hit a sustained 20 MPG twice in over 250,000 miles. Both times I was going less than 65MPH over flat ground behind a larger vehicle. The rest of time I have averaged closer to 15-16 on the highway at reasonable speeds (~75). Going faster or in town it will drop like a rock. If the Ecoboost motor can give me more horsepower/torque and 20+ driving normally I will be one happy camper.

Those of you claiming to average 20+ over long a long period are either hiding some info or drive like Miss Daisy is sitting inbetween a truck full of nuns.

It's called a 6 speed transmission.
