Buy 2010 FX4 soon or wait for 2011?
I'm asking this for a buddy of mine (already have a 2011 Raptor on order for myself).
Friend wants to buy an FX4, crew cab, 5.5' bed. He definitely wants navigation but not much else (perhaps a rear view camera). For 2010, these sticker our at 43,955, for 2011 they're about $400 more (but a backup camera is included, so they're essentially equivalent). Assuming he picks one of the lot, it'll probably have another 1k in misc options as well.
The 2011 has the 5.0L, selectshift, HD radio (according to owner's manual at least), 110V inverter, electric power steering, Raptor/HD headlights/taillights, and the new trip computer with a 4.2" LCD screen.
2011s have a $1500 rebate, 2010s have $4500. (I'm basing this on Ford's web site data, but their web site appears to be moderately broken, so please correct me if I'm wrong). I'll assume that 2010s are going to be just about gone within a 60 days. Dealers appear to be quite eager to unload 2010s at the moment though.
For the 2011 he'll be paying invoice/X-plan/costco price for the truck, unless there is some better solution out there.
I'm just curious how Ford's rebates tend to work...i.e., do they typically run the rebates year round these days? Do you think the 2011's get the 2010 rebate once the 2010's clear out? This is what I've seen with GM stuff, but can see it not being the case for a bit with the 2011 F-150 given that it should at least initially have some momentum in the market. Then again, December is *NOT* a good time to launch a model year revision.
I don't want to tell him to wait for 2011's if they're going to be "hot" and it winds up costing him $4000 more. But I don't want to tell him to buy a 2010 and two months later find out he could have gotten the same deal on an '11. Always a risk either way, of course.
Appreciate any advice/suggestions!

Really a waste of time. You're asking for third hand advice for someone we know nothing about. We have no idea what he values and he cannot directly converse. If he buys before March 2011, I expect the price delta to be close to your $4k number. Then the incentives will start ramping up on the 2011 model.

I was in the same position yesterday. I was trying to decide between the 10 and 11FX4 Super crew. Anyhow Im picking my 10 up today. If I were to buy an 11 it would cost me almost $4500 more then the 10, and Im stepping into a new platform motor(which is a great motor). I like the 5.0, and the truck will probably run very strong but the savings dont justify it for me. Goodluck

What about the grill, the LCD screen, and all the other new features for 2011? Not to mention the money he would be save on better gas mileage. He can also get the twenties they offer on the fx2. He is saving maybe 4000 grand but losing it as soon as he drives off lot because his truck is already a year old. I personally would wait to see what the mpg that ecoboost engine is going to get. Just my opinion

rickey, I think you are right. I owned two 2010 models and got very good trade values at trade time. But, those days are over for the 2010 when the 2011 models come out. I recently traded my 2010 Screw Lariat and got $500 less than I paid in January. And, you could walk across the street to the Ford dealership and buy a new one for the same price or less. I got lucky. I made money on my XLT trading it as I bought it very cheap. But, once the 2011s hit, it will be like the 2010 Mustangs. The trade values, etc. will be dead.
If I were buying a new truck right now, it would be the 2011.

That being said, I would get the 2011, based on the 6 speed tranny being reworked. I am not happy with how mine shifts and I think that will be the issue that hurts the resale the most for the 09s and 10s.

It depends on what he plans to use the truck for. If he is using it for a DD with minimal towing then get the 2010 and save some cash. If he is going to do a significant amount of towing then wait for the new engines. If I had it to do all over again I would have waited and got the ecoboost. The 5.4 is adequate but labors when pulling a 6000+ lb trailer.

Towing is a factor for me, but it's not the end-all decision maker.

Im not so sure the 5.4 is tried and true. I have an 08 fx4 and had a cam phaser replaced at 28k, left me stranded on the side of the road. I am now at 35k and every now and than i get a diesel like sound. Not to mention other problems that needed to be fixed. I baby my vehicles and take care of them, very bothersome.
