Purchase help

Hey guys, I've purchased trucks before but don't think I've always gotten the best deal. I'm in MN and am looking at a nicely equipped 2010 Screw XLT 4x4. I'm trading my 2007 XLT Screw 4x4 with 62000 on it, in really good shape. Here is what they are offering:

Trade price- 17,500
2010 price after rebates- 32,073 off MSRP of close to 40,000

Any and all advice is much appreciated. The trade seems low and the price on new seems a tad high. This forum is the best.

You should be able to buy that truck at or under invoice. Then take 6500 off for Rebates. Whats the blue book on your truck? There are quite a few variables at play, but most dealerships are the same. I think FORD has a holdback of 3%, anyone else with more knowledge chime in.

There are quite a few guys on here that have done that. Invoice on your truck is probably around 36,xxx.

KBB trade in is about 18,000. Retail BB is well over 20,000.

Try another dealer, My dealership gave me $23,300 for my 07 XLT with 63000 Miles on it. I payed $35836.28 for my 2010 FX4 that MSRP's for $44,410. This was in early september before the big push to move the 2010's. You can do much better.

The best advice I can give you is find some comps for your truck in your area. See what dealerships are selling your truck for and what people will actually pay for your 2007. Condition is always important, and be honest with yourself. If you think your truck is excellent then ask for $19k, what do you have to lose??

As far as the new truck, outright ask for the invoice. If they don't comply go elsewhere, they need to sell more than you need to buy. They can sell that truck at invoice, they are still making money.

I bought a nicely equipped 2010 Scab XLT 4x4 pretty much all of the options available (except rear slider, rear defrost, and maybe a couple other things). Consensus I gathered was that a Screw was going to be about $2500 more, like them, but couldn't rationalize that extra dough (95% of the time its just me).

I think you can probably get that truck down to around 31 then throw in your equity (I hope you aren't upside down).

Just my .02, but do your homework..... and SEARCH THIS FORUM.

Thanks guys, I've ran searches on this forum ad nauseum but no situations are alike I guess. The same dealer I'm dealing with has 3 or 4 07s for 23,000 to 25,000 on the lot. I think that's what peed me off. I knew they were making money on the new one and trying to make that much on my trade put me over the edge. I will go elsewhere. The big trouble is I've bought or leased 3 trucks from them.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but isn't there pretty good money in selling used cars versus new cars??? I feel like I heard that somewhere..... might be mistaken.

Go elsewhere, I bought my truck 140 miles from my house. You are right no situation is the same but they are all pretty similar, we like shiny new trucks, so we get rid of our old not so shiny (most are still immaculate, on here anyway) trucks, its a viscious cycle where we all lose money.... hahahaha. But they are cheaper than girls especially if you are married. Good Luck 50, keep us posted and throw up some pics if you get one.

Maybe wait for a 2011???

I've thought about that.

Should have kept my 98 or my 04 or my 06 and invested the money I've spent on my toys...nahh, what fun would that be?

A new '10 FX2 at the local dealer is marked down $4600 below MSRP. Also, KBB is an informational website/price. All dealers go by the NADA Black Book value for trade and retail prices.

So, when you go to trade, ask them what the Black Book value is? If they won't tell you I would walk away. You will not always get Black Book on a trade. But, most reputable dealers will get you within $500 of the vehicle value.

I used to sale vehicles for Mitsubishi and KIA. The last two days of the month are the best time to buy. The dealers will usually bend over backwards to make a deal; gotta make qouta to get that extra bonus.

Used vehicles are a complete different animal. The markup's are usually high because the dealer is trying to make up the difference from the mark down on the purchased vehicle vs. the trade. Make sure to do a complete walk around on a used vehicle. Ask for a CarFax (they should be free), do a complete top to bottom walk around and ask to view the UVI (Used Vehicle Inspection) RO (Repair Order). If they refuse one of these, WALK AWAY. Alot of used vehicles are purchased cheap from a local or near out of town auction.
