'11 5.0L oil change frequency?

What's the consensus with the '11 owners going the full 10k miles between oil changes? I know the new ILSAC GF-5 spec oils are supposed to help deliver better fuel mileage and longer serviceability than the current ILSAC GF-4 oil.

I plan on going every 6K with MC syn blend and a MC FL-500S filter. What do other '11 owner's plan on doing?

If the manufacture specs it at 10,000miles. Then don't be afraid. I remember when BMW came out and said over 10,000miles before the first oil change. Everyone was freaking out saying it was insane.

So here's an interesting question. The 5.4 has a 7500 mile interval but I think it was based on the GF4 spec oil. Now that all I can find is GF5 does that mean they would be able to run to 10000 too?

If you are worried about it send a sample of oil in for analysis. This should give you a better piece of mind if it's safe to go 10000 miles or not. I recently sent in a Mobil 1 sample after 4500 miles on my 09. I'm now running motorcraft semi synthetic and will do another analysis to determine if Mobil 1 is protecting my engine any better. If it's not a significant difference I will stick with motorcraft as it is significantly less expensive.

I too have a 5.0L and am hesitant to go 10k miles, but the engine almost takes 8 quarts of oil (okay, 7.7 quarts). I'm going to stick with the 5w-20 that Ford recommends, and may change at 5k intervals just because of the dusty off-road conditions I encounter.

For what its worth, Ford did 10k oil changes on the Ecoboost that they used for their "torture tests". The Ecoboost takes 6.0 quarts vs 7.7 quarts in the 5.0L. If 10k is "acceptable" for the Ecoboost, then it should be "acceptable" for the 5.0L too.

NOTE: I thought the Ecoboost took 5w-30, but my owners manual shows 5w-20 for it? Maybe this has since been revised.

The new online version shows 5W30 Syn Blend or Synthetic. I know the message center is suppose to notify the driver when it is time to change the oil and I also know you can lower the percentage until next service by increments of ten %.

My son just changed the oil on his '11 3.7L Stang at 5500 miles and he said it looked a little brown but nothing too bad. I know the oil will darken overtime as it is keeping the engine clean. My problem is the MC oil filter. Is it really good for 10K miles? That seems an awfully long time.

My mother has a '05 GMC Sierra and changes her oil when the oil service light illuminates and has used 5W30 Conoco oil with no issues. MC oil is made by Conoco-Phillips and should be the same oil as Kendall, Conoco or Phillips 66 Trop Artic. As a side note, Trop Artic Syn Blend can be found for about $1.40 less per qt than MC Syn Blend. My father used Philips 66 oil in the 60's, 70's and 80's and really preferred it over other oil's so I may use the Trop Artic Syn Blend 5W20 with the MC FL-500S filter.

I noticed the 6.2L has a service interval of 7500 miles due to intricate performance parts or something to that effect.

I was raised in a family of mechanics. The old guys always changed oil every 3-4k. When I bought my F250 and realized oil changes were more expensive due to the 4 gallon capacity. I started reading up and had Blackstone Labs run my oil samples. I sent them some gasser samples also. The 6L PSD did like to shear oil viscosity but it still had plenty of detergent and base oil left. So I quit throwing out perfectly good oil every 3-5k. I now go by the oil life monitor or a little sooner.

How many miles do you average per oil change?

I'll follow manufacturer recommendation. Changed '09 @ dealer every 7500 just like it called for. My wife's Benz is every 12K, Mobil 1. I will have 125K warranty & as long as I follow FOMOCO I'll be good. Oil will be till 10K too.

The filters for the new 5.0 are a little more $$. Not like its to big a deal, but wonder if they changed the filter media inside?? Does it still have the anti-drain back valve?

IOLM operation, interesting stuff.

More than likely, if you stayed on top of your required maintenance duties, you’ve changed your oil every 3,000 or 5,000 miles. With the introduction of the IOLM, now you’ll be able to take your vehicle in for an oil change based on actual operating conditions.
What the IOLM measures to determine when an oil change is needed

Several key factors that affect oil life include:

Driving habits (such as towing and workload)
Hours in operation and at idle
Oil and coolant temperature
Engine speed and torque
Diesel particulate filter (DPF) cleaning cycles

How the IOLM works

The IOLM does not use oil quality sensors – it is entirely software-based and uses actual engine operating conditions to calculate the oil change interval by using an algorithm. This means the system must be reset after an oil change. Not doing so will result in a premature OIL CHANGE REQUIRED message.

The frequency of oil changes

Depending on driving conditions, oil change intervals are approximately:

Up to 10,000 miles - Normal commuting with highway driving
5,000 – 7,500 miles - Trailer tow/high-load driving
3,000 – 5,000 miles - Short trip usage, extreme cold or hot temperature
NOTE: Actual mileage will depend on your specific driving conditions.

Under normal conditions, you will get an OIL CHANGE REQUIRED message at up to 1 year, or 10,000 miles from the previous oil change.

What the IOLM tells you

You’ll find a display in your instrument cluster’s message center that will notify you of oil change intervals by displaying ENGINE OIL CHANGE SOON or OIL CHANGE REQUIRED. The system will also indicate when fuel filters need maintenance, or if fuel pressure is low.*

*Refer to owner’s guide for specific applications.

Synthetic oil and the IOLM

Ford engines have been tested using Motorcraft® Synthetic Blended Oils. If you do use synthetic oil, it needs to meet the Ford specifications for motor oil and the specific oil weight as indicated in the owner’s guide. Ford still recommends using the oil change service intervals as indicated by the IOLM.

Vehicles that will get the IOLM

The IOLM will be available on most vehicles under 8,500 lbs. gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) and the all-new 2011 model year 6.7L Power Stroke® Diesel on the Super Duty® model. That translates into over 90 percent of the 2011 model year Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles sold.

For in-depth details about the IOLM, please refer to your owner’s guide and diesel supplement.

Motorcraft® is a registered trademark of Ford Motor Company.
