Update on 5.0 fuel mileage

Wow... Surprisingly un-impressive fuel economy numbers from the 5.0...
I average 17.5 mpg (hand calculated) with my 2005 with the 5.4 and 3.55 gears and running an 87 high performance PHP custom tune with 97,xxx miles on the clock, filling up at the same Texaco station every time for about the last six months.

I have not reset it ever since I've bought the truck. That should be the most accurate over all. Besides that I hand calculate, no room for error that way.

Using E10 will kill your milage. Add to that the use of winter blended fuel and it goes down even more. So the milage you are getting looks pretty darn good to me.

I run Shell E10 due to their fuel quality. We have Conoco and Conoco/Phillips without E10 but the mileage is no better than the Shell E10. I always run Conoco 87 octane (100% gas) when I visit family in TX and I always average 1.5 - 2 mpg better than in AR.
I think it has more to do with the fuel quality in AR vs. the fuel quality in TX. I also get great mileage from Conoco 87 octane E10 in MO.

I hope it doesn't sound like I'm complaining about my mileage. I'm actually pretty impressed. My driving style is pretty hard. I don't like driving behind people and I love the way my truck sounds when I get on it so I do it a couple of times a day. Over the course of the year I may spend a little more on fuel but it isn't enough that it's gonna make me drive like a grandma! Drive it like you stole it!!!

Not trying to be a butt here but is that mostly city? Mostly highway? You may have a different driving style which makes a HUGE difference...and power, have you pulled up next to a 5.0 and raced?? It would pull away from you so fast...they do really well for what they are. Sure they could be better, but what's perfect?
You would not "pull away from it so fast".......Infact, it would be all you could handle to edge it out.......if you even could beat it at all.
My money would say you couldn't!

If you compared trucks in same configuration......cab, box length, 2wd or 4wd, 3.55ls........and raced a 5.0 vs. a well tuned 5.4 running a custom 87 performance.

If you want really good gas mileage... buy a beetle. If you wanna go really fast... buy a race car. I'm like every other normal guy in the fact that I like best of both worlds, but realistically that won't happen. If your on the throttle it's gonna guzzle. I never bought my truck with intention of getting good gas mileage. I bought it cause it was $15,000 cheaper than my stroke.
