Today, the "Trans Temp" showed 208F. Ambient temperature was around 55F, and I was in 4wd. Usually it runs between 190-195F.

 

I have a 2009 FX4 that I have had the LV Amsoil tranny fluid in ever since I had 1000 miles on the truck. I now have 24,000 miles on the truck. I don't have a tranny temp gauge so I can't tell you any temp readings but I run Amsoil in the engine, both diffs, and transmission. It is the best stuff you can get.

 

Oh you did it, now were going to head into another oil debate...

 

Huh - I have an '09 FX4 and I have a tranny temp gauge - wonder why yours doesn't.......

Sorry, meant that to read that I can't give a numerical reading for temperature. My truck has a needle gauge. I didn't really notice the needle running in a different place after I put the amsoil in but it could have been a few degrees cooler. If the needle is in the middle of the gauge I can only tell that is normal, if it is on the left side that tells me it is cool, and if it is to the right (which it has never been) that tells me it is hot. I can't relate that to an exact temperature.

 

I would not worry too much about the temps in the 195 range. It the trans cooling lines run through the radiator, it will pick up some of the heat from the engine coolant.

Ford probably has a technical article somewhere about it.

I would however make sure that I followed the recommended trans fluid change schedule.

 

That seems too hot. But there are some changes from the 08 to 11, my 08 ran 150'ish under normal driving and would hit 207 climbing 6% grades for 3-5 miles in 80-90deg temps. It also had an aux trans cooler that was twice as big as whats on my 2010. I called the parts guy at the dealership and expressed my concern for the really small trans cooler on the 2010 and he said there are no upgrades ( I have the max tow package) and to not add a larger after market cooler as it would void the warranty. I'm a little concerned as I will be towing a 7000lb travel trailer all over Oregon and where ever else. But I guess thats what warranties are for. I do have a 11,300 tow rating, and 17,100 GCVWR so I'm well within specs. But back tto the OP's question, if your running 190 now and it's freezing out, whats it going to read when it's 80-90 out and someone wants to tow 6-7000lbs?

 

F4Pilot - how is the shifting in your amsoil filled tranny? does it exhibit any of the quirks that people speak of here?

 

My 99 Expy with only 139k miles may not make it to 150k given a recent transmission problem, so maybe that is why Ford says not to change the 6R80 fluid for 150k miles.

I'm tempted to change the 6R80 tranny fluid every 30k, but I tried to remember to do that on the Expy, and it's not happy...

 

400 mile round trip today, unloaded, outside air temp 74 degrees. Tranny temps were 192-201. This is on a 2011 Lariat, 5.0, 4x4 with 1500 miles.

 

When my truck was new it had a few hard shifts but they were seldom and random. The hard shifts stopped soon after I put the Amsoil in. I think it was a combination of the "learning phase" of the adaptive transmission and the Amsoil together. I have never had my transmission re-flashed and I have not had a hard shift or anything abnormal since the fluid change. It shifts perfect all the time, I would recommend the Amsoil tranny fluid and all their products.

Thanks F4pilot. Exactly which Amsoil tranny fluids did you choose? I have been to the website a few times and there are more than one option for the trans/diffs. Thanks again
