2011 f150 transmission temps
#46
My truck is an 11 Ecoboost/4x4/screw/3.31 axle and my tranny temp is always 190s once she is warmed up. The highest I have seen was 214 towing my boat back from Alabama. Air temps were a little over 90 and I was going through Birmingham. Boat and trailer are about 6500 lbs and if anyone knows what going through Birmingham is like you know what I mean. Constant stop and go traffic on the interstate up and down 6* hills. My truck sure made me proud though, she was constantly pulling past small blocks towing campers on the way back! At the time my truck had 7000 miles, now it's at 11,250.
btw Casey our trucks are almost identical except the front grills. Gotta love candy red metallic!

Just to add more info regarding the 6R80 -- in the workshop manual (I bought a subscription), Ford describes how to check the transmission fluid - they also describe the normal operating temperatures:
"The transmission fluid level is correctly checked when the transmission is at normal operating temperature, 89ºC-102ºC (193ºF-215ºF), and the vehicle is on a level surface."
Also saw that the "normal schedule" does not require a fluid change ever; but their "severe duty" indicates a fluid change at 150k miles. Hard to believe.
-----
EDIT to add:
Transmission Fluid Temperature (TFT) Sensor
The TFT sensor is a temperature dependent resistor that is in contact with transmission fluid in the transmission sump area.
The PCM monitors the voltage across the TFT sensor, which changes as transmission fluid temperature varies.
The PCM uses the TFT sensor signal as an input for its strategy for shifting and TCC operation. The PCM also uses the TFT sensor signal for transmission fault detection and diagnostics.

2011 F150 FX-4 Trans Overheating
I just turned 75K on my EB F150 FX-4 with 3.73 rear and tow package. Initially took the truck to the dealer who reflashed the trans and told me that the trans would relearn my driving characteristics. One day after leaving dealership, trans got worse and trans went into limp mode. I took truck to private mechanic for a fluid change which revealed cooked trans fluid and a melted speed sensor. After a fluid change and further testing, the 6R80 was diagnosed as failing. I had a new transmission installed and now when driving truck, trans temp hovers around 199 - 204 (unloaded truck @ highway speeds). I'm looking for anyone who can recommend a trans cooler replacement as well as a line replacement. I've read that FOMOCO has installed a temperature valve on the 6R80 to allow the trans fluid to warm in cold climates. 200F trans temps just don't do it for me. What do the guys running Mustangs or the Raptor folks do with their 6R80 trans cooling issues?

glc, I hear you but I still can't believe someone out there hasn't addressed this issue... especially after I just paid over $6K for a new transmission. Call me crazy but it just doesn't make sense. If Mercon LV is truly synthetic, it's should flow easier than standard hydraulic fluid especially in colder temperatures. Hence, the need for a trans fluid warming circuit (valve) seems useless to me.

Thermostat
the 6r80 has a proper thermostat that won't even flow fluid through the cooler until it's up to temperatures to 185 to 190F. 190-200 is correct and completely normal. Read the fluid change procedure and read the notes section on page 307-01-4.
