no i was on ice.....trying to climb a small hill outside of the car wash, i was at the bottom of the hill ( i couldnt make it up in 2 wheel ) so i backed up to the bottom of the hill stopped and put it in 4x4 started to creep forward very easily and then thats when the bang happened. once i made it to the top of the hill ( maybe about 25 feet in distance) i turned the corner and put the truck back in 2 wheel. after the bang there was a slight grinding sound but once in 2x4 the ginding stopped

Well based on what you've described, it definitely sounds like something is biding up in the front drive train area. I don't know the mechanics of it all enough to say specifically what, but being as it went away when you switched back to 2WD, I think it's safe to say that's what's wrong (front drive train issue).
Hopefully everything is fine. I've heard many people here post about "loud bang, grinding noises, binding feeling", etc. cause they engaged their 4wd on a surface that was not slippery in anyway. Usually everything is ok (it is a Ford after all ) but they learn quickly not to do that again.

Yeah, definitely would be a good idea to have it checked. But like I said, hopefully everything is OK. What region do you live in? Could you go try out the 4WD in some snow or ice in your area? If so, you might find (hopefully) that the noise is gone and everything is working fine. Might have just been a fluke thing where the front diff got bound up, for what ever reason.

I notice just a minor pop in the front end if making a somewhat tight turn. So I try not to do that. I wonder if the rear pop was caused by a load on the truck. Like when shifting out of park when on an incline, I get it occasionally when on the boat ramp, I try using the e brake to stop it. Maybe since you said you were trying to go up that hill you had a load on the drivetrain when it shifted into 4x4.

Last Feb after the big snow here in VA I was on a dirt drive way dead stop for a couple minutes put my 2010 in 4wd hi and when I steped on the gas I too heard a loud bang in the truck sounded like the front diff, it was it had split all the way around the front pumpkin and blew a piece of the housing out the size of a tennis ball 787 on the miles. Went to ford the next day and they said they had never seen anything like it they replaced the whole front end axles and all.
