2011 Fx4 Ecoboost vs 5.0
Hey guys,
I am torn in buying my new truck. I won't be using it to tow a whole lot. I do love the throaty sound of the 5 litre in the supercrew and I like how the ecoboost pulls like a diesel.
My main focus will be gas mileage. Is there that much of a difference between the 2 motors? I am trading in my car because I have heard these new trucks get better mielage then most luxury sedans.
What are people getting per tank in KM's or miles. I am in canada.
Please Advise,

I like both as well. Not sure what to do..
The mileage is the primary concern for me. Does anyone one have any real numbers for how many km's or miles per tank you are getting? I have heard from the dealership that 2 customers were getting 950km's per tank and the other one was 1100km's per tank. Thoughts?
Anyone have any of those numbers for the 5.0?

I think the EB is the best. No you don't get that roar of the engine but there are some after market exhausts that make some V6s sound pretty darn good, if not like a small High power V8.
The 5.0L can't be that great on gas especially when coupled to the 3.73 rear end that is needed to tap the high rpm power out of this engine. My Sport Trac 4WD had the excellent 4.6L 3 Valve V8 which did better at mileage than the standard 4.0L V6. However in the 700 lbs lighter Sport Trac, the EPA ratings were 14 and 19 mpg compared to the 2010 Screw 4WD 5.4L's 14 and 18 mpg. So far, I am seeing only about 1 to 1.5 mpg less than the Sport Trac. Put that engine in the heavier F150 and the mpg would be the same.
fueleconomy.gov states that the 2010 5.4L is 14/18, 2010 Sport Trac 4.6L is 14/19, 2011 F150 5.0L is 14/19 and 2011 3.5L Ecoboost is 15/21.
Now here's the kicker, that same 4.6L 3 valve I had in the Sport Trac and only got 1 mpg better is used on the 2010 F150 but amazingly the EPA MPGs jump to 14/20, yet I know this engine will get no better mileage based on my ownership of the Sport Trac with this same and transmission (except for lower capacity torque converter).
2010 5.4L combined mileage is 15 mpg, while 2010 Sport Trac and F150 4.6L 3 Valve and the 2011 F150 5.0L all get a combined 16 mpg. The 2011 Ecoboost get a combined 17 mpg. The 2011 6.2L gets 12/16 mpg with a combined 13 mpg.
The 6.2L is really a gas guzzler but the smaller displacement V8 only differ by 1 mpg or less and the Ecoboost unfortunately is only 1 mpg better than the 5.0L. So don't choose the Ecoboost for better mpgs but for it's better power output while maintaining the mpgs of lower powered engines.

I have received 17.6 - 17.8 mpg (avg. comp. read .5 - .6 higher) on four tank's of Shell 87 octane in combined driving. I tend to get on the throttle once or twice a tank. The exhaust note sounds good at WOT. I haven't experienced a lack of low-end power as other's on this forum have had when driving the 5.0L. On the other hand, I wasn't greatly impressed with the off-the-line power of the FX4 EB I test drove last year.
I'm not trying to start a new debate on which is better. I think all four new powertrain's are promising. You should test drive several to decide which is best for you. I would suggest a 3.7L if you are strictly looking for fuel economy. I'm not sure which powertrain and body style's are available in the 3.7L. I have seen them in reg cab 4wd and in SCab 2wd model's in the local area. Good luck with your decision.

I am not against new technology, with that said I would also consider a 5.4L. My 5.4L gets about 16-17 combined mpg and I actually hit 20 mpg after a 4 hour drive on straight highway.
