Miles to empty reminder

2010 F150, my trucks miles to empty reminder always comes on when there are 50 miles left. Is that just the way the info is set up because how does it know wether I'm getting 18mpg or 13 mpg?

It knows because it is constantly calculating your fuel mileage.

Mine came on with 50 miles on some steep windy back roads. I drove about 15-20 miles and it got to 0 miles to empty. I filled up, but can't remember if it was actually 35-36 gals or not.

Getting it too low ?? Well here in high tax NY it's better to get to nearby PA or better NJ to get gas . Even then I give the man $100 and hope I get change for the 26 gallons.

It also reminds you at 25 MTE. I've ran it about 12 miles past when it said 0 MTE so I'm not sure how accurate it is. I was sweating that time for sure.

Jersey Turnpike is usually cheaper than in PA, plus they pump it for you! Blew my mind that they will not let people pump their own gas in NJ, but apparently its the law there. I have no idea if you have to be certified to pump gas or what it says about NJ peoples ability to pump gas on their own but I'm not complaining, it's cheaper than pumping it myself in any of the surrounding states!

Well it is not true, I picked my truck up from the dealer with 0 miles to empty drove it to the gas station and still only put 24 gallons it with a 26 gallon tank. Ford uses the fuel to keep the pump cool so it need to keep 4~6 gallons in tank at all time.

the reason for only getting 24 gallons instead of the 26 is the filler neck goes deeper into the tank than it should. on the superduty's alot of people drop the tank and cut the excess off and gain another 3 gallon capacity because the pump doesn't cut it off as soon.

Yup, me to... In fact, now that I know there is a 25MTE alert, I will probably mostly stop filling at 50MTE...

My truck has a 38gal tank and I never have looked at the MTE monitor. I have been filling up at 1/2 tank just because I hate seeing $100 come out pocket at one time plus pump cuts off and I have to restart it if I let it get too low

The reason is the service station attendant's union. They have enough clout to block self-serve.
