Got my 2011 FX4 back today and started checking it out. I thought the FX4 package included 3 metal skid plates; front differential, transfer case and fuel tank. The skid plates at the front differential and transfer case are metal, but the plate below the 36-gallon fuel tank is plastic. Should the fuel tank skid plate be metal? I doubt a plastic one would provide much protection while off-road.

 

I'm no expert but my first thought is that metal = spark. That's probably not what you want around a fuel tank. But like I said ... I am no expert.

 

the reason why its not steel is weight savings. a steel skidplate that large of an appropriate thickness would weigh 150-175lbs
