My 05 runs between 145 and 157 unless it is 110 outside and then it gets up to 170.

Blue, im with ya on my 07 as well, but thats truck only no trailer.

 

Well, that translates to about mid-point on the gauge. There is very little temp fluctuation.

 

The 6 speed in the newer trucks runs hotter. I've driven 3 EB and 2 5.0 trucks and all of them ran that hot. Outside temps were from 40 to 115, heaviest trailer was 5k on an EB test drive. That truck had been running drag races all day.

 

I was referring to temps while towing my 6k travel trailer...guess I should have specified.

 

Yep, Micheal figured that out.

 

Both of your trucks are Lariats and that model has one of the more open grills. If your trans only went up 10* I doubt airflow though the radiator was an issue since the trans cooler seemed to work just fine. I was trying to find a few common traits between the two incidents that might lead to a cause.

 

You should keep your 2005!..............

BTW, my license plate is off center allowing extra air flow thru the cooling system (thought that was standard).

The truck was around 2300 lbs UNDER the max rated capacity; there should have been no troubles at all with the trip. I don't care how hot it was that day a max tow rating doesn't come with a warning sticker "Max tow rating only achievable down hill in cool weather...."

I am suspicious though of the over heating if you look at the video of the davis dam races with 9000lbs. The EB crushed the dodge off the line but the Dodge really caught up by the end of the race. Their wording is really fishy there something like "max combined time over three races..." which sounds to me like if the total time it beat the truck 0-60 was 12 seconds that would mean it was really around 4 seconds each time for 3 races. There's no way the average margine of victory was a 12 second differential. To get to my point at the end of the video you can see the dodge was only1 second behind the ford after it blew it away off the line. That means the dodge was gaining quickly on the Ford. Someone on here mentioned "heat soak" at the time, interesting to see if this holds true.

Eithe way I'd really like to hear how this ends. Please keep us posted. It would be very frustrating if this turns out to be a big problem, what's the point of such a huge tow rating if you can't use it.

I figured with the vehicle request would more by like trim (Crew, super, standard), max-tow or standard tow, gear ratio 3.55, 3.73, 4.10, any mods, and different tires, gas octane for filling prior to hill.

 

Just for information, my 2010 Lariat Screw runs tranny temps at about 190 when towing my 6,000 lb. travel trailer. The engine temp averages about 190 to 195. This is at about 90-95 degrees outside air temp. I've hit 200+ on the tranny, but it is usually for a very short time. I always forget to check the intake air, but it usually runs about 2 to 4 degrees above the outside air temp if I recall correctly.

 

Mine is a SuperCrew... Max tow (11,300 lbs) ... No mods... Stock tires... 88 octane before first climb where overheat occurred (7% grade) and 93 octane coming up from the other side.... less of a grade I'm pretty sure. Pretty sure the max tow has the 3.55 gear ratio.
