Looks like the 5.4L 3 Valve is alive and well in 2012
Ford Media has released the specs for the 2012 Expedition and it retains the 5.4L 3 valve and the 6 speed transmission. I just love this 5.4L engine. I love it's torque band and the responsive transmission.
The Expedition comes standard with the 3.31 axle with an option for the 3.73 axle.
There was speculation of the Expedition going with the Ecoboost or the 5.0L but Ford kept with the tried and true 5.4L 3 valve.

"Expedition stayed on a model-specific frame with the 2003 redesign (utilizing IRS to accept the fold-flat third row) as the F-150 moved onto a new frame in 2004. The two products shared the 5.4 V8 through the 2010 model year, as the Expy/Navigator soldier on with the old engine while the F-150 got new engines for MY2011."
The Navigator, according to Ford on FB said it's here to stay. So expect to see some Expy and Gator redesigns by 2014.

As for TRUCK owners, well, they have a couple decent powerplant options.
EASY! Just kidding!

Well had a co-worker looking at the Exp EL and didn't go with it because it was not up to date as my F150. He is going to the competition for this reason, come on Ford get with the program! At least fix up the interior as it is the same one that came with my 2004.

I would not want my family in it, when it runs away and crashes.
Definitely not a Nissan where the suspension is so soft, it has to come with an air leveling suspension and where it's always breaking down.
Then there's Government Motors. Have yet to know anyone who has one with less than 100,000 miles, that hasn't had major drivetrain problems or computer problems, OR BOTH!!
Everything else is either midsize or a crossover.

XPYs and NAVGs got a refresh inside and out in 2007(mainly just cosmetic). GM did a total redesign in 2007.
It has been my understanding that the XPY was and is still on the 04/08 F150 Chassis but with modifications to back portion of the chassis for the rear independent suspension.
In 2009 its production was moved to the Super duty plant in KY. I am not sure if that is because it now shares more components with the super duty then the F150s or what there reasons were. But now that the F150 powertrain is not even shared with the XPY, other then maybe wheels and tires, I don't know of any similarity of the F150 and the XPY.
I for one, would really like to see them move the XPY over to the 09+ F150 Chassis and cab design. The current Xpy is very dated and cramped inside for such a large vehicle outside. The F150 has very very noticeable head, hip, shoulder, and leg room advantages over the older F150 based design the Xpy is based on now.
Ford could loose the IRS and go with more of a multi link coil setup, to save cost, and add more versatility, solid axles are much better for towing. Without the Excursion around anymore an all new EB or 6.2 powered current F150 based SUV would be a welcome site to many I am sure.
