5.0L mpg

5.0L mpg
Well, I have never cared about mpg on my trucks. On my 2005, I watched the mileage go from 19.2 to about 15.8 after all my mods and the 10% ethanol came into existance. I kept records of every gas purchase and mileage more to monitor the health of the engine than a concern for mileage. With the purchase of this new truck with the 5.0 and all the discussion about mpg, I am now curious to see what I can get before I start modiding(if I do). Drove exactly 100 miles this morning, the truck now has 259 miles on it, got on it hard once to pass an 18 wheeler, but most of the miles was on cruise set at 72. If the computer is accurate at all, got 20 mpg. Very responsive and smooth. Now I am into mpg and I hate myself!
What are others getting?
Edit: It's an XLT Supercrew, 3.55 LS

another one? and coming from you bluejay
city: i've been getting 15 all summer due to a 5 mile commute to work, before that i was getting 16-16.5 going to school which i guess could be considered in town driving.
highway: still haven't had a full highway trip, but have averaged mid 17's. 300 of that tank was city, 200 was highway.

My best combined mileage to date is on 87 Shell (E10) and received 20.2 mpg. My best Highway is with cruise set @ 70 mph on 87 Shell (E10) and received 21.5 mpg. I'm to lazy to use pen and paper so I figure everything using my cell calculator.

Seat of the pants, my 5.4 seems to have a little more, especially at higher rpms, when passing, but not enough that I miss it. I doubt I do a tuner on the 5.0. The 2005 5.4 had to have one just to make it responsive and to shift firmly. The 5.0 from the facory shift good and is responsive, so I don't feel the real need at this point.

That is very good. You're a little lighter. How many miles do you have on it and did the mileage improve as it got broke in?

At about 7,800 miles as of yesterday. My best combined mileage came in the first few months of ownership. My best Hi-way mileage was last month at around 7,000 miles on a trip to TX and back.

I do complete fillups every time I buy gas and try to use the same pumps. I get a receipt, write down my odemeter and then keep a spread sheet of every purchase. I have done that for 6 years on my 2005, and it was interesting some of the things I discovered. One that comes to mind is that I consistently got worse mileage out of Exxon. I buy Chevron, Texaco or Shell. I am fortunate that those brands have outlets where I am that are as cheap as anyone's gas.

First of all, congratulations on the new truck! Second, that's darn good mileage for any truck. I wouldn't say I'm **** about the mileage on my 2010, but I do keep that window open in my Information Center and keep a close eye on it. The best I've ever seen with my 3 valve 4.6 is about 19 MPG - and that was babying the truck big time. I recently got a re-flash for a transmission shudder and lost a bit of 1 MPG in the process - and can't go back to the old tune. With mostly 65 MPH highway driving, I can barely squeek 17 MPG out of her now.
