Add another to the list. I was towing a 5000 lb travel trailer in CO and UT. It was in the mid 90's and into a head wind. Same thing reported by others. Temp guage started to climb on the long hills. As soon as I backed off or reached the top the temp would drop back to normal. I never got the warning. I was running regular gas (ran premium the day before and was running regular that day to see if there was a noticable difference in mpg). I will run premium next time to see if that solves the problem. I will take it to the dealer even if it means nothing more than adding another incident to their database.

Did it overheat or temp just climb? It's normal for the temp gauge to go up some under continuous load.

Yeah, kinda the point I was making. No need to take it to the dealer just because the temperature gauge climbed, as is expected in these conditions.

Hey guys I dont have the ecoboost but was wondering if any of the guys with the over heat if you have anything blocking the center opening where the cooler intake is. I have heard the restricting any of the air flow through there could cause an over heating issue. Sorry I didnt read all 5 pages of this post so sorry if someone else has already mentioned this.

I have a 2012 Platinum with regular tow package. Here is the info from the sticker on the radiator.

I don't tow and the truck has not overheated, just want to help with the data base.

Did not overheat. Just rather concerning to see the temp gauge suddenly start climbing and get to the high end of the "safe" range.

That's why a lot of manufacturers started putting "idiot gauges" in that are no better than the "idiot lights" they replaced. They show off, running, too much, or not enough and little else. It was a bit concerning with the last car I had with real gauges. As the RPMs fluctuated I could see the voltmeter go up and down, but that is what a voltmeter is supposed to do.

I'm with 1depd, I hate these glorified idiot lights. Why bother with a gauge if its not telling you anything? If you're going to phone it in just give me Fuel, Speedometer, and tach and call it a day. Otherwise put REAL gauges on the dash. At least the digital trans temp gauge in the LCD works. However I really wish on Ecoboost that Ford would have put a Boost gauge in place of that useless oil pressure gauge.

For the record, a 6% grade last week at 106 degrees. Temp started climbing to 228 degrees. Was running 55mph and 2400 rpm. Dropped back to 45 moh and temp dropped back to 208. Stock gauge never budged - it basically won't move until you get in the danger zone. Monitored my temp with a scangauge. Never hit limp mode. I agree with the guess in the turbos and heat.

I have an overheating experience as well. I have a 2012 SCrew 4x4 Ecoboost with 3.73 gears and max tow package, running 87 octane, and in tow/haul mode. I was pulling a loaded bumper pull camper about 8,000# over Monarch Pass, CO this summer. Temp was 82 towards the bottom and 62 at the top. At about 10,000' elevation the information display gave the giant red triangle saying it was too hot and the temp gauge went from center to pegged in about 1/2 second. I reduce the throttle back and it immediately dropped to center again. I then accelerated and it did it again. It was very repeatable. There is a fine line out there that this motor can't cross, despite temperature.

Otherwise, it pulled that trailer around with confidence. I was very impressed except for this one incident. Interestingly enough, it didn't happen coming back the other way over the pass.

Red, you should be running premium gas while towing heavy.
