F-150: Motor Trend's Truck of the Year!

Doesn't matter which engine you have and what the "tow rating" is - towing 10k with a 1/2 ton truck will almost always put you over one of the other limits - such as GVWR, GAWR, and/or payload. The max tow rating is under artificial ideal conditions - 150# driver, 1/4 tank of gas, NO cargo or passengers whatsoever, and minimum tongue weight.
GCWR on my truck is 17,100 Truck weighs about 5 boat weighs 10 so Iam 2k under that.
GVWR for my truck is 7700. Truck weighs 5, tongue weight on my boat is under 600 but well still say 600. Four people at 200lbs which is very liberal for us, and say 200lbs of gear, and Im only at 6600lbs with another 1000 to spare. I agree you have to be careful but you are well under the ratings if you are smart. And most people tow their boats an hour or less so it doesnt matter. heck I have seen 33ft Bajas being towed by 2003 Tahoes at the launch,

I think you need to check out some forums where people are towing boats because this truck is getting bought and used big time with great success.

And, you may want to weigh your truck if you think it weghs about 5. Try closer to 6, if not over 6. Plus 4 guys, 200 lbs of gear, tongue weight of 600, 200 lbs of gas, plus all the features on your truck...you are over weight.
Check the payload sticker on the door jamb of your truck...
This is the reason I drive an F250. The F150 would pull the load no problem, but I would be overweight with my fifth wheel, and I wouldn't feel safe putting my family (or others) in danger by trying to get the truck to handle more than it should.

I've lived it... Twice. Never again. If I do, I'll make changes to what I tow. My 6500# TT will max me out every time with my family and minimal in the bed. Like said above, you can't just subtract weights from the max trailer weight and be good to go. Payload of 1,600# runs out quickly for a loaded family weekend.

Just because people are doing it, doesn't mean they are within limits.

But lets be realistic, its my wife and I and a beach bag so 600lb tongue weight plus us and bag maybe 1000lbs there. Well under the payload limit. Boat and trailer realistically weigh more like 9500 because I never tow with a full tank, so now Im back over two grand to spare for total carrying weight. And guys with the same boat as mine think have said the tongue weight is more like high 4's to low-mid 500's. You do have to do your HW and be careful like you say, but its toatally feasible and safe in these trucks.

2011 Super cab 4x4 is just over 3 grand I think, so I mean were not talking big numbers here although 1000lbs is a lot. and if your talking an older diesel your only getting like 2500lbs of payload. So these new 1/2 tons are not your daddys half ton

That's not bad, but I thought you were going to say a higher number for a F-250. The 2012 F-150 SuperCrew is rated at 2310 lbs in the book in 4x4 and over 2600 lbs in 4x2. We haven't seen any payload stickers yet for the new heavy payload SuperCrew F-150, but I have to guess they will both be easily over 2000 lbs with options. It's a good time to buy a F-150.

Dont quote me but I dont think your going to see any tongue weight above 600lbs on anything until it gets to be really big because as far as I know any F150 or F250 is only able to tow 600lbs of tongue weight. basically what your saying is anything over 5-6klbs would be untowable for most of the trucks on the road.

What people have to start understanding is not the MPG, but the fact the truck can tow what it can tow. I am getting 16 in the city or so, 21 HWY, which is awesome coming from a diesel. Towing my 10k boat I get 10, my diesel only got 11. Hook up that 10k boat to that 5.0 and check it out once.
I too am kind of disapointed in towing MPG, but look until this configuration nothing could tow 11,300 and I was stuck with my F250 paying out the ace for fuel and Maint.
Flat out there is nothing on the market in this class that has the peformance that this has with the MPG's. So I say to spend money on a V8 just because of the sound is not worth it.
Like it or not MPG's is going to dominate car building, not only because of CAFE but because of peopls wallets, we will not see $2 a gallon ever again, I doubt we see $3 a gallon either. Rumor is chevy will have an ecoboost out next year with its totally new line up and dodge is working on something. As much as I love the American V8 I think its going to go by the way side, these turboed engines are only going to get better.
